The Assistant Vice President for Engagement (AVP) provides executive leadership for UW's broad-based stakeholder engagement programs and services. The AVP works across the University community with a wide range of internal and external partners, including colleges, athletics, volunteers, sponsors, and community organizations, to develop integrated programs that foster inclusion, belonging, and connection throughout UW’s diverse communities.
This position is responsible for strategic planning, personnel and fiscal management, program evaluation and assessment, and aligning engagement initiatives with institutional priorities. In addition to the UWAA and UWRA, the AVP supports UW’s strategic relationship with the University Book Store, an independent retail organization. The AVP will also contribute to the development and implementation of ASE’s comprehensive engagement strategy for the new Ana Mari Cauce Welcome Center (https://www.washington.edu/welcomecenter/) , scheduled to open in Spring 2028. The AVP leads a 25-person team with oversight of more than $5 million in non-profit and institutional resources. The AVP reports to the Vice President of ASE and serves on both ASE’s executive team and University Advancement Extended Leadership Team. As a visible and engaged leader, the AVP maintains a regular on-campus presence and actively participates in events, including evenings and weekends, to build strong, inclusive relationships on behalf of one of the world’s leading universities.
What You Will Do:** **Executive Leadership, Strategy, and Collaboration (50%)
•Lead alumni and stakeholder engagement programs that foster belonging and meaningful connections among UW alumni, retirees, students and community partners.
•Develop and implement comprehensive processes and instruments to track performance and outcomes metrics, including engagement dashboards and membership analytics.
•Collaborate with ASE Marketing and Communications to develop and implement annual and long-term engagement strategies.
•Provide executive oversight for the UWAA dues-paying membership program and co-develop strategy with the AVP for Marketing and Communications in coordination with Advancement technology teams.
•Develop and manage a sustainable engagement budget, ensuring effective fiscal oversight and compliance in partnership with the AVP for Administration and Operations.
•Collaborate with 28 unit and college-based Advancement teams and their Chief Advancement Officers to align engagement efforts with institutional goals and industry standards.
•Contribute to the strategy development for the planned Welcome Center and lead ASE-specific engagement planning and assessment.
Personnel and Program Management (35%)
•Lead all ASE engagement personnel and program operations, including team and organization development, engagement and assessment.
•Recruit, supervise, and evaluate a diverse team of full- and part-time staff, student employees, consultants and vendors.
•Manage a $5M budget for personnel, operations and programs. Ensure consistent application of resource management practices across departments.
•Represent ASE/UWAA on internal and external committees and support strategic initiatives, volunteer recognition and engagement with key stakeholders.
•Provide Executive Team support to the UWAA Board of Trustees and cultivate alumni and volunteer relationships, particularly in regional markets.
•Ensure inclusive practices in recruitment, vendor selection, fiscal management and daily operations.
•Provide executive leadership, collaboration, and coordination for tri-campus alumni engagement strategy.
•Represent ASE/UWAA in professional organizations, including Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE).
Access, Opportunity, and Belonging Strategy (10%)
•Develop and implement ASE community-centered engagement strategies and practices, with primary responsibility for developing and institutionalizing an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to increasing relevant, aligned, reciprocal, and sustainable engagement with historically underrepresented or marginalized UW audiences.
•Collaborate and coordinate with UW and Advancement leadership, the UWAA Board of Trustees, the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, and affinity-based groups, including MAP and the UA Equity Committee, to advance shared goals and objectives for inclusion and belonging.
Miscellaneous Duties as Assigned (5%)** **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences, Education, Business Administration, Marketing/Public Relations AND at least 10 years of experience in higher education, business, non-profit, institutional advancement (alumni relations, marketing/communications or philanthropy) or related human services field.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **What You Bring:
•Demonstrated experience successfully leading and managing within highly complex and integrated organizational, political and external environments.
•Current executive-level leadership experience in a small or mid-size alumni relations program, or senior-level leadership experience at a large, public flagship alumni relations program.
•Direct experience with alumni engagement management, supervision and program oversight.
•Experience working with high-level administrators, corporate executives and professionals. Experience handling sensitive and confidential material.
•Experience with executive fiscal management, team compliance, and system oversight.
•Demonstrated ability and professional experience in centering programs and services focused on inclusion and belonging.
What You Can Expect:
•Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.
•Frequent local and out-of-state travel, which may include evenings and weekends.
•Ability to travel internationally.
