    Description:

    Supervisor for Home Infusion Pharmacy

    SUMMARY

    Supervisors in operations supervise and coordinate day-to-day operations of the Home Infusion Department to meet the pharmaceutical needs of the patients and assist in the administration of pharmaceutical services for patient safety, effectiveness, and stewardship of resources. Clinical Services Supervisor supervises and coordinates day to day activities of clinical pharmacists and pharmacy department clinical services to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of the patients and assure that the clinical pharmacy team provides identified services for patient safety, therapeutic effectiveness, and stewardship of resources.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    Minimum: Home Infusion experience: Bachelors degree in Pharmacy. Pharm.D and/or residency is desirable.

     

    Clinical Services: PharmD and ASHP Residency

     

    Preferred: Strong background in Antibiotic Therapy and Nutrition (Home Infusion Only)

    Credentials/Licensure

    Minimum: Licensed Pharmacist in the State of Michigan. Controlled substance license.

     

    Preferred: Clinical Services: BCPS or specialty certification by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties

    Related Experience

    Minimum: Three to five years practice in the setting to be supervised with a history of increasing responsibilities. Coordinating /supervising an ambulatory infusion program (Home Infusion Only). Background in information systems helpful..

     

    Preferred: Two to three years previous supervisory experience. Success in roles leading projects, programs, or teams related to the area to be supervised.

     

    Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Minimum:

    Preferred: Completion of Mercy Health Leader Development programs. Knowledge of Lean production principles and applications.

    Computer Competency

    Shows how to use (through a competency assessment) a standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including full competency with email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job including, but not limited to Microsoft Office applications.

    Physical/Mental

    Minimum: Sit, stand, stoop, twist, walk (30% - 80% of work time). Lift, carry, push pull objects weighing up to 10lbs. (10% of work time). Perform detailed tasks with frequent interruptions & changing priorities (80% of

     

    work time). Hear speech and distinguish sounds; speak loudly and softly; utilize near vision; fine motor skills and manual dexterity.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Provides leadership and serves as a role model and resource person for clinical and staff pharmacists. Leads, analyzes, and appraises pharmacy services provided to patients, physicians, and ancillary departments across the system.

    • Maintains outstanding skills as a practicing pharmacist or clinical pharmacy practitioner.

    • Supervises and coordinates day-to-day activities in an area within Pharmacy to assure quality pharmaceutical products and services are delivered to patients.

    • Assures patients receive the correct drug therapy at the proper time and that appropriate legal records and requirements are maintained. Accepts the legal responsibility, along with other pharmacists, for drugs and dispensing of drugs in the departments. Ensures compliance with appropriate licensing and regulatory standards.

    • Assists in writing, revising, and implementing departmental policies and procedures. Assists in development and implementation of departmental procedures for the quality control of medications dispensed, assuring patients receive safe and effective pharmaceutical products that meet the various legal regulations.

    • Coordinates recruitment, assists in hiring, performs evaluations and evaluates merit increases relating to subordinate performance. Makes recommendations regarding wages. Performs first line coaching, counseling, and discipline of subordinates. Recommends termination of subordinates when appropriate and participates with the upline Manager or Director when separation is pursued. Schedules work hours of subordinates and models work assignments for staff.

    • Communicates and collaborates with staff, management, various departments within Mercy Health Saint Mary’s and outside professionals such as industry representatives, educators, and other pharmacists.

    • Provides input into ongoing pharmacy program development, budget, activities and functions. Operations supervisory input includes, but is not limited to procurement and inventory control, data processing and distributive systems. Clinical Supervisor provides input and communicates vision for the course of the Clinical Pharmacist Specialists and provision of clinical pharmacy services across the continuum of care at Mercy Health.

    • Operations supervisors seek continuous improvement of the various dispensing programs and systems to improve safety, improve quality, and provide excellent value to patients and the health system.

    • Provides pharmacists and other departmental personnel with formal and informal education experiences and opportunities. Promotes access to education and reference materials that support up to date evidence based practices and that promote continuous professional development.

    • Participate in the training, education, precepting, and evaluation of pharmacy students and/or residents as assigned.

    • Assists Manager or Director in efficient departmental operation by managing controllable expense (labor and materials) and evaluating processes and systems for opportunities to reduce waste, improve function, and more effectively steward resources.

    • Operations Supervisors ensure that the pharmacy computer system is constantly reviewed/revised to meet the needs of the department, medical staff, patients and employees.

    • Stays abreast with developments in specialty area to ensure services provided are progressive and meet the needs of the patients.

    • Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating effectively in group decision making, working to accomplish team objectives and projects, and by soliciting feedback about one’s effectiveness as a team member. Continually improves processes by seeking ways to eliminate and reduce waste and improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Addendum: Clinical Pharmacist Supervisor

    • Oversees safe and appropriate pharmaceutical care for the patients of the system by developing and using evidence-based and best-practice protocols.

    • Promotes and supports safe medication use.

    • Collaborates with Director and Coordinator for shared responsibility for formulary development, drug use evaluations, therapeutic drug protocols, drug information, and development and maintenance of clinical pharmacy services.

    • Initiates, analyzes and reviews daily, monthly, and annual reports to determine compliance with departmental clinical initiatives and value propositions.

    • Shares responsibility for departmental publications, educational programs, research, and pharmacy initiatives to promote pharmacy as the most respected source of drug therapy information and management.

    • Maintains an active role as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Participates in other committees at the discretion of the Director.

    • Provides a unified voice for the Clinical Pharmacist Specialists to the Pharmacy leadership team.

    • Collaborates with the Pharmacy leadership team to provide vision for the course of the Clinical Pharmacist Specialists and the provision of pharmacy services.

    • Provides leadership in departmental strategic planning for clinical resource utilization including Clinical Pharmacist Specialists, residents, students and pharmacist interns.
