    The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for a part-time temporary Research Assistant to support ongoing research projects in the areas of zooplankton ecology and environmental DNA analysis.

     

    This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual seeking to gain hands-on research experience in both field and laboratory settings. The position requires strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

     

    The Department of Biological Sciences (https://usm.maine.edu/department-biological-sciences/) offers a comprehensive educational experience, combining rigorous academic programs with diverse research opportunities. Students can pursue undergraduate degrees with tracks in general biology, human biology, biotechnology, and teacher certification, as well as a flexible graduate program tailored to individual interests. The department's faculty, all holding PhDs, engage in research across various disciplines, including animal behavior, developmental biology, functional biology, genetics, immunology, marine ecology, microbiology, neurobiology, and plant ecology.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Assist with zooplankton ecology research, including:

    + Field sampling and zooplankton collection

    + Laboratory processing and taxonomic identification of zooplankton

    + Maintenance of experimental aquaria and live cultures (animal husbandry)

    + Data entry and organization using Excel

    + Support molecular work on environmental DNA (eDNA) projects:

    + DNA extraction and purification from environmental samples

    + Quantitative PCR (qPCR) setup, execution, and analysis

    + Documentation and data management

     

    Located on our Portland Campus, this is a part-time, temporary position that will pay $18.00/hour. The work schedule is flexible, 10 – 20 hours per week depending on availability and project needs.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, or a related field

    + Prior molecular laboratory experience, particularly with DNA extraction and qPCR

    + Familiarity with microscopy and biological sample handling

    + Proficiency with Excel and digital data management

    + Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

    + Ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot experimental protocols

    + Experience with animal husbandry or maintaining aquaria is strongly preferred
