    The Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate 1, SOM position. The incumbent supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.

    CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

    + Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.

    + Participates in the publication of significant results.

    + Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.

    + Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.

    + Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.

    + Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.

    + Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.

    + Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.

    + Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.

    + Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

    Key Skills

    + Animal handling & surgery

    + Mastery of rodent handling techniques (restraint, injection, anesthesia).

    + Independent performance of tumor inoculation, surgical resections, and post‐op monitoring.

    + Ability to adapt and learn new techniques.

    + Genotyping & colony management

    + DNA extraction, PCR‐based genotyping, record‐keeping for breeding schedules and Mendelian ratios.

    + PDX library & database organization

    + Cataloging PDX models, linking tumor and clinical metadata, maintaining secure and searchable records (e.g. REDCap, LabKey).

    + Cell line derivation & characterization

    + Establishment of patient‐derived cell cultures, sterility verification, and routine mycoplasma testing.

    + Assessment of DNA damage repair protein levels via blotting or immunofluorescence.

    + Genomic & pharmacologic assays

    + Preparation of sequencing libraries; coordination with core facilities or in‐house platforms.

    + Execution of high‐throughput drug sensitivity screens; data normalization and curve fitting in GraphPad Prism or R.

    + Administrative & compliance tasks

    + Drafting and updating IACUC protocols, amendments, and annual reviews.

    + Ensuring laboratory SOPs and training records are current.

    + Communication & collaboration

    + Clear oral and written reporting of methods, results, and protocol changes.

    + Ability to work across basic‐science and clinical‐research teams.

    + Honest and integrity in collection and reporting of data.

    Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in scientific field or related.

    Experience:

    No prior experience required, but preferred especially with animal models and rodent surgery.
