    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    The Opportunity

    Reporting to the Division Project Manager for Electrical and Controls, the IECI Principal Drive Systems Engineer provides project and technical support to the other IECI functional groups and to local Mill Departments as needed. This position supports capital projects and provides technical support in the 21 Smurfit Westrock paper mills and 3 extrusion plants in the USA and Canada. Occasional support is also required in Mexico and Brazil. Travel is required.

    How you will impact Smurfit Westrock

    * Provide oversight of selected coordinated drive systems and MV drives upgrade projects in the 21 Smurfit Westrock Mills.

    * Provide remote/on-site technical assistance to mills as needed on existing drive systems.

    * Assist in the development and implementation of strategic plans. Support FEP-1, -2 & -3 development.

    * Foster good stakeholder (Operations, Maintenance and Engineering) relationships to develop defined, clear and concise project requirements that are tied to business goals.

    * Provide E&C technical support to Division Mill Engineering Project Managers on Class A projects. Provide technical E&C support to mill project managers on critical (high priority) projects.

    * Collaborate with engineering consultants, manufacturers, and third-party integrators during project development, detailed design and engineering.

    * Review sizing and selection of motors and drives with engineering consultants and vendors.

    * Review project design drawings, specifications and other documents produced by engineering consultants, manufacturers, and third-party integrators to verify technical accuracy.

    * Ensure compliance with TAPPI standards, FM requirements, NFPA regulatory documents, BLRBAC standards on recovery boilers and manufacturers recommendations on turbine generators.

    * Review construction to assure compliance with project requirements and specifications. Work with contractors to address technical issues and meet schedule requirements.

    * Direct or lead project consultants during the construction and startup phases of projects.

    * Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of control systems, drive systems, switchgear, generators, and other major electrical equipment.

    * Lead or assist in the checkout and startup of major capital projects as directed.

    * Conduct and document post project reviews to determine areas for future improvement.

    * Lead the implementation of new technology related to enhancing electrical and controls reliability. Stay abreast of all major technological developments in these areas.

    * Facilitate the transfer of Best Practices/Technology between the mills.

    * Lead the development and upkeep of all Corporate Electrical & Instrumentation Specifications and Best Practices.

    * Support mill annual outages as requirements dictate and scheduling permits.

    * Review NRL studies and power studies (short circuit, load flow, relay coordination and arc flash) performed by outside consultants for the mills. Perform NRL & power studies as necessary to support projects.

    * Assist Electrical and Process Control Roundtables as requested.

    What you will need to succeed

    * Bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical engineering or closely related degree.

    * Extensive experience in coordinated drive systems and MV drives. Must be able to configure and tune drives on multiple platforms, including GE, ABB and Rockwell.

    * Travel up to 75%, depending on project phase.

    * Ability to work in a variety of manufacturing and construction environments, including nights and weekends if required.

    * Minimum of 10+ years of project management or related experience in an industrial environment.

    * Experience in pulp & paper and/or industrial processes and systems

    * Strong interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.

    * Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.

    * Effective written and verbal communication skills.

    * Adaptability to rapidly changing working environments and operational situations along with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects or tasks.

    * Ability to understand and develop relationships with mill and division leadership to anticipate and satisfy their needs.

    * Strong computer skills in MS Office Suite, and Microsoft Project.

    * Ability to obtain and apply meaningful feedback from key stakeholders.

    * Customer focused, continually seeking innovative ways to improve project execution.

    * Excellent problem-solving ability - Determining causes of operating errors, developing and implementing sustainable solutions.

    * Experience in process control design, power distribution, PLC / DCS and variable speed drives.

    * Strong leadership abilities including critical thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

    * Systems Analysis Knowledge and Skills - Determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes. Strong organizational and leadership skills.

    * Ability to understand, support and enforce operational and technical policies.

    * A sense of area ownership and urgency to act are required.

    * Physical ability to operate in paper mill environment, including light to moderate lifting, walking and climbing, oral communication, correctable vision, and ability to work in a hot, humid, and dusty environment.

    * Familiarity with drive tools (ABB, Rockwell, and GE) is preferred.

    * Familiarity with AutoCAD is preferred.

    * Proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
