North Central Correctional Facility is a minimum-security prison with an excellent team of coworkers including 6 nurses and a nursing director.
Provider sees patients in the health services clinic which is a locked unit.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT JOB DUTIES:
Provide Direct Medical Care and Assessments for Incarcerated Individuals (I/Is)
• Complete I/I clinics at NCCF and other DOC facilities as delegated by the DOC Medical
Director.
• Provide medical screening, including assessments of acute or chronic medical health problems, obtaining health and psychosocial history, performing complete physical examinations, and ordering diagnostic tests (labs, x-rays, EKGs, or referrals to off-site specialists at UIHC).
• Treat I/Is’ acute injuries, including suturing lacerations or addressing emergent situations as they occur.
• Perform annual physical examinations as required by DOC policy, identifying and diagnosing newly found health problems.
• Monitor chronic medical diseases of I/Is as identified in the ICON medical system per DOC policy.
• Assess and monitor I/Is’ deteriorating medical conditions, corresponding with the DOC Medical Director for possible transfer to UIHC or IMCC infirmary.
• Be present during scheduled Telemed appointments to communicate medical knowledge and assessments to UIHC practitioners for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Manage Medical Documentation and Follow-Up
• Complete required documentation for each requested test on the ICON medical system.
• Order prescribed medications on the ICON medical system for diagnosed acute or chronic diseases, following the DOC formulary.
• Review and sign medical referrals for I/Is seen off-site at specialty clinics, including UIHC recommendations, and order medications or diagnostic testing on the ICON medical system.
• Review and sign x-ray reports from contracted radiologists or local hospital radiology Departments daily.
• Review all lab results on the ICON medical system daily.
• Co-sign verbal or phone orders on the ICON medical system daily.
• Complete accurate and timely documentation in the ICON medical system to maintain records per DOC Health Services policy.
• Review charts of new I/Is transferring in weekly to ensure proper follow-up and monitoring of chronic diseases per DOC policy.
Attend Meetings and Provide Policy Input
• Attend Pharmacy and Therapeutic meetings, DOC physician meetings, DOC formulary Review Committee meetings, NCCF health services meetings, Health and Safety meetings, QA/AI meetings, and other meetings as directed by the DOC Medical Director.
• Verbalize recommendations or clinical advice to the DOC Pharmacy Director during formulary reviews.
• Review tentative UIHC appointments of I/Is as required by the DOC Medical Director.
• Make recommendations to the DOC Medical Director on health services policy and procedures impacting I/I healthcare delivery.
Ensure Compliance and Safety
• Ensure NCCF medical services comply with DOC-approved safety, sanitation, and infection control policies.
• Assess and evaluate employees and I/Is with potential exposures to blood-borne pathogens, order follow-up labs, and provide education per DOC policy.
• Review employee health records and lab results in the ICON medical system weekly and
document respirator wear.
• Report scheduling problems to the Nursing Services Director.
Support Quality Improvement and Legal Requirements
• Provide information as directed by the DOC Medical Director for QI/QA.
• Provide written or oral testimony for court cases as needed.
• Follow DOC policy and procedures, responding to emergent situations with primary
practitioner services (e.g., CPR, AED, oxygen, nasal/oral suctioning).
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Licensure as a physician assistant by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistants.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Designated positions in this class require registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
