AIRLIFT NORTHWEST** **Director of Clinical, Quality and Patient Safety
RESPONSIBLE TO: Executive Director/ Associate Administrator
The Director of Clinical, Quality and Patient Safety provides leadership and clinical management of the Airlift Northwest medical transport team. Serves as a director with a direct reporting relationship to the Executive Director and is directly accountable for patient safety, clinical care and standards quality and process improvement along with all regulatory requirements for the program. Fulfills administrative duties as well as completes technical activities necessary to assure responsiveness to the program's mission and vision. This position is responsible for the highest quality patient services attainable by the organization within available resources, while ensuring a cost-effective operation. This individual participates in the selection and, motivates and provides for the growth of a qualified clinical staff and builds rapport with medical partners to ensure the best resources are consistently obtained. The Director of Clinical, Quality and Patient Safety assures that high quality medical care is provided by a staff of appropriately trained, duly certified and licensed practitioners. This individual ensures a safe and efficient physical environment and establishes a problem identification and resolution system.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assures excellent patient care, safe operations, high customer satisfaction and program success.
2. Assures integration of clinical functions to achieve program success, high customer satisfaction, excellent patient care and safe operations.
3. Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all clinical care, patient safety, quality and process improvement aspects of the transport service, efficiently managing the associated physical, financial and human resources, and establishing the annual strategic and operational goals and objectives.
4. Serves in a clinical/administrative role with the transport program Medical Director. Works closely with sponsor organizations and their respective systems, and with multi-state network of service users.
5. Works with the Directors of Operations, and Business Development to oversee and evaluate flight staff.
6. Responsibility for quality management program with a dyad relationship with the Medical Director Chief Quality Officer and the UW Medicine CQIP department
7. Responsible for the support and management of the Airlift Northwest peer support team
10. Provides direct oversight of the safety manager and clinical education manager
11. Proposes, reviews and enforces policies and procedures by:
a. Facilitating the communication and interpretation of clinical policies and procedures to Assistant Directors, Bae Managers,, nurse educators, and flight team members, including the review and delivery of targeted education on clinical guidelines."
b. Overseeing adherence to established policies and procedures to ensure consistent compliance across teams and operations."
c. Monitoring compliance with established policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with University of Washington Human Resources policies and contractual agreements. This includes initiating and supporting corrective actions as necessary to uphold standards and maintain regulatory and organizational compliance."
d. Reviewing policies and procedures and revise as needed at least annually and to meet CAMTS requirements.
12. Works directly with vendors, program staff and users to assure safety of patients, crew, and customers in all areas of critical care transport operations.
13. Perform Administrator on call duties.
14. Resolve system problems that affect operations by maintaining open communications and appropriate interfaces with management, staff and contracted personnel.
17. Assists in the development and implementation of the strategic plan by the organization by:
a. Participating in the ongoing review of Airlift Northwest/UW Medicine goals and objectives.
b. Maintaining effective working relationships with healthcare facilities, EMS providers and law enforcement agencies in the Airlift service area.
c. Evaluating needs expressed by internal and external customers.
d. Participating on the Executive Team developing, implementing and monitoring strategic plans and implementation of programmatic solutions.
18. Participate in all human resource activities of the nursing staff to include hiring, termination, and staff evaluation. Assure compliance with policies and procedures. Assist personnel in establishing performance standards, policies and procedures, and compliance with government regulations.
19. Oversees the successful accreditation for the Commission of Air Medical Transport Systems
20. Ensures high profile for Airlift Northwest through industry event attendance, speaking engagements, articles and other marketing techniques as appropriate.
21. Initiates and facilitates changes to improve patient care and program performance through effective communication, collaboration, and interdisciplinary problem solving.
23. Serves as a role model and mentor for assigned staff by consistently demonstrating professionalism.
24. Assumes responsibility for professional development and integration of acquired knowledge and skills into practice.
26. Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies. Minimizes liability to the organization by anticipating problems, evaluating magnitude of the problem and taking actions to correct problem and/or reduce risk.
27. Contributes to effective consumer relations by assisting patients, co-workers and other health care members to resolve expressed concern by:
a. Demonstrating a positive and helpful attitude.
b. Contributes to organizational operations by performing other duties as may be required.
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to meet each essential duty and responsibility to a satisfactory level. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or experience required.
1. Demonstrated aptitude for organizing and coordinating multiple projects at one time, and ability to anticipate and prospectively address the needs of staff and the base.
2. Knowledge and experience of Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) standards is required.
3. Knowledge of all related federal, state, local and transport industry safety/regulatory practices.
4. Oversight of CLIAA license and bi-annual survey
5. Excellent public, employee and customer relation skills.
6. Demonstrates excellent customer service even under adverse conditions and a track record of making sound decisions, managing multiple priorities with appropriate prioritizing; and, the ability to effectively communicate.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. Master’s Degree in Healthcare, Business, Public Health, Nursing preferred.
2. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
3. Registered Nurse required.
4. Three years’ experience required in the following: direct supervision of health care/patient care services, working in a tertiary facility and/or critical care/air medical transport program, developing budgets and implementing programs within budgeting limitations.
5. Supervisory or management experience in EMS or air medical services preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
1. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, policy and procedure manuals, legal documents, technical procedures, and government regulations.
2. Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
3. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and other employees.
REASONING ABILITY:
The Director of Patient Safety, Quality and Process Improvement works with minimal supervision and direction, using discretion and independent judgment when appropriate.
1. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
2. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
3. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and apply them to the situation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Director of Clinical, Quality and Patient Safety may operate a computer for extended periods of time; generally workdays in office; must be able to communicate by telephone, in person and in writing; work with considerable interruptions. Must be available for after-hours Administrator on-call duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Airlift Northwest is 24 hours, 7 days a week operation. Employees may be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to ensure that our customers receive the highest level of service.
