    Job Summary

    The Rare Books Department at the J. Willard Marriott Library is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic student to join our team as a Part-Time Rare Books Assistant. This role offers a unique opportunity to work closely with rare and valuable books, manuscripts, and archival materials, contributing to their preservation and accessibility for future generations — from four-thousand-year-old clay tablets to twenty-first century artists’ books. Help preserve a heritage of thought, artistic endeavor, and innovation that inspires the human spirit today. This position will provide reference, research, and access to the rare book collections while strengthening the ability of faculty to teach, students to learn, and communities to find common denominators.

    Responsibilities

    + Assist in the preservation and conservation of rare books and manuscripts under the guidance of the Rare Books Librarian and Assistant Curator.

    + Help with the organization, cataloging, and shelving of rare books and archival materials.

    + Provide support in digitization projects to enhance accessibility of rare materials.

    + Assist patrons and researchers in locating and handling rare books in accordance with library policies.

    + Contribute to special projects and exhibitions featuring rare books and archival materials.

    + Maintain cleanliness and order in the Rare Books Department.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters

     

    Preferences

     

    + Strong interest in rare books, history, literature, or archival studies.

    + Attention to detail and ability to handle fragile materials with care.

    + Reliable and responsible work ethic.

    + Excellent organizational and communication skills.

    + Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

    + Familiarity with Library of Congress classification.

    + Experience with digital scanning equipment and software.

    + Demonstration of strong organizational skills.

    + Demonstration of excellent human relations and communications skills.

    + Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite.

    + Minimum 35 wpm accurate typing preferred.

     

    The successful candidate demonstrates an understanding of and enthusiastic commitment to the book as a major cultural, historical, and timely accomplishment of human thought and craft.
