Position Summary:
The Medical Special Education Associate will provide one-on-one special education, medical and personal care support to students in grades 5-12 with significant medical and physical needs. This position is critical in ensuring the student’s health, safety, and well-being throughout the school day while promoting the student’s independence and inclusion in the educational environment.
Responsibilities:
Student Care and Medical Support:
+ Assist students with lifting, transferring, and positioning, using proper body mechanics and safety techniques.
+ Provide daily living assistance to the student, including support with toileting, grooming, hygiene, and mobility needs (e.g., transferring between wheelchair and desk).
+ Support students with feeding needs, which may include oral feeding, tube feeding, or other medical interventions as directed by a nurse or healthcare provider.
+ Assist with the use and maintenance of medical devices (e.g., suction machines, oxygen tanks, G-tubes, mobility aids).
+ Medication distribution
+ Administer basic first aid as needed and respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
Safety and Supervision:
+ Work closely with special education teachers, nurses, and staff to implement the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP), ensuring all medical and personal care requirements are met.
+ Support IEP implementation as directed by special education staff, gathering and recording specific data related to the IEP as needed.
+ Collaborate and problem-solve any issues with the IEP roster teacher and other staff to address the student’s unique needs.
Collaboration and Communication:
+ Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, teachers, and administrators to implement and follow student care plans.
+ Document and report medical documentation accurately and promptly.
+ Communicate effectively with staff and families regarding student needs, concerns, and observations.
+ Maintain confidentiality of student information at all times.
Qualifications:
+ High school diploma or equivalent required.
+ Experience working with individuals with medical needs, physical disabilities, or special needs preferred.
+ CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) or related certification preferred but not required.
+ Basic life support (BLS) and first aid certification are required.
+ Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
+ Ability to follow prescribed medical protocols and handle confidential information professionally.
+ Experience working with disabled students in a structured situation is highly desired.
+ Experience working with students in a classroom setting is highly desired.
