Job Description: The Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist assigned to the content filtering team in the Technology Services Division is an employee with a wide range of experience with the processes and technologies of the WNYRIC. Reporting to the Manager, TS Infrastructure as a Service team, the Technical Support Specialist exercises leadership and some independent decision-making concerning the assigned duties. The Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist will work on second level problem resolution for any of our 100 plus school districts, with a polite and courteous nature.
+ Coordinates/implement/maintain the ongoing operations of the content filtering solutions and may assist with the wide area network, (WAN) and telecommunications network.
+ Implements and maintains district level networking (including but not limited to routers, firewalls, wireless management, VoIP equip, filtering servers, VPN's, switches) and related operating systems.
+ Provides installation, customization and maintenance of approved vendor supplied software for Content Filtering.
+ Prepares charts, tables, diagrams and emails to assist in with any issues or problems while collaborating with team members.
+ Performs the monitoring and adjustments of network systems for optimal performance.
+ Organizes and prepares network systems documentation.
+ Performs the monitoring and adjustments of firewalls, filtering, VPN and other networking devices.
+ Communicates with district personal for efficient diagnostic and problem resolutions.
+ Maintains proficiency in current WNYRIC configuration and management tools including, but not limited to, content filtering configuration, sniffer analysis, SolarWinds, Splunk, Juniper and Fortinet.
+ Interacts with WNYRIC Sr. WAN and LAN Specialists, application coordinators, specialist and customers to maintain optimal performance.
+ Undertakes physical activities such as keyboarding, lifting, and tasks related to the installation, troubleshooting and support for telecommunications devices weighing in excess of 60 pounds.
+ May work in schools where students, teachers, and administrators are present as needed and holds and maintains a valid drivers' license.
+ Provides and facilitates communication between Supervisor, team members, customers and other WNYRIC Teams (electronic mail, voice mail, cell phone, text messaging, collaborative virtual environments, etc.).
+ Collaborates, as necessary, with other members of the organization in order to meet the evolving technical advancements in the K-12 environment.
+ Studies and evaluates methods and procedures to determine the adaptability to existing network technology.
+ Familiar with setup and use of Active Directory, Windows, Ethernet, TCP/IP, DNS, electronic mail, PCs, MACs, Chromebooks, iPads and other technologies, as required by specific assignment.
+ Provides off-hour coverage as requested.
+ Performs other duties as assigned that are relevant to the civil service job description for this title.
Job Qualifications
Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience in computer programming which included, at least, on (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software; or;
B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) or four (4) year college or university with an Associate’s degree in Data Processing, Computer Science, Business Administration or related field and four (4) years of data processing experience, two (2) years of which, included computer programming, and at least, one (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software; or;
C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of data processing experience, two (2) years of which, included computer programming, and at least one (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software; or;
D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C).
