    Job Summary

    The McNair Scholars Program Coordinator plays a critical role in supporting the successful implementation of the federally funded Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program at Old Dominion University. The Coordinator works collaboratively with program staff, faculty mentors, and campus partners to coordinate and deliver individualized services that prepare first-generation, income-eligible, and underrepresented students for graduate and doctoral study.

     

    This position is responsible for coordinating daily operations, maintaining student records, and implementing high-impact services including advising, graduate school preparation, research engagement, and academic support. The Coordinator manages a caseload of participants and supports them through tailored academic planning, mentoring, and enrichment opportunities aligned with the McNair grant objectives.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Student Support & Advising

     

    + Provide academic, career, and graduate school advising to McNair Scholars, with attention to individual needs and long-term goals.

    + Support students in identifying appropriate graduate programs, preparing application materials, and navigating the admissions and funding processes (e.g., fellowships, assistantships).

    + Coordinate individualized degree planning and needs assessments to promote retention and timely graduation.

    + Assist students in developing strong non-cognitive skills such as goal-setting, time management, and resilience.

    + Maintain a caseload of participants and provide consistent, documented services and follow-up.

     

    Program Implementation & Operations

     

    + Coordinate the delivery of McNair workshops, seminars, mentoring sessions, and academic events.

    + Support logistics for the Summer Research Institute, including faculty collaboration, student placements, travel arrangements, and research dissemination.

    + Track student participation in program activities and support graduate school application progress.

    + Assist with the coordination of national research conferences and scholarly presentation opportunities.

    + Ensure alignment of program activities with McNair grant goals and federal guidelines.

     

    Assessment, Evaluation & Data Management

     

    + Maintain accurate records and data for all participant services in accordance with federal compliance requirements.

    + Monitor academic progress, research engagement, and graduate school application outcomes.

    + Assist in preparing data reports, performance updates, and information for the Annual Performance Report ( APR ).

    + Develop and implement assessment and evaluation tools to improve service delivery and student outcomes.

     

    Partnerships & Collaboration

     

    + Work closely with the McNair Director, faculty mentors, and graduate school representatives to support participant development.

    + Promote a student-centered culture of excellence, inclusion, and achievement.

    + Support outreach and recruitment of eligible McNair participants.

    + Maintain strong communication with university departments and external collaborators.

    Other Duties

    + Participate in professional development and training aligned with TRIO best practices.

    + Represent the McNair program at events, conferences, and campus functions.

    + Perform other duties as required or assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Master’s degree in higher education administration, student development, counseling, social work, STEM , or a related field from an accredited college or university.

    + Experience providing academic, career, and financial advising to underrepresented college students.

    + Experience supporting students with scholarly engagement, graduate admissions, and financial aid.

    + Experience coordinating mentoring, academic support, and tutorial services.

    + Familiarity with student needs assessments, academic planning, and learning strategies.

    + Knowledge of graduate school application procedures, timelines, and resources.

    + Ability to track student retention, graduation, and outcomes.

    + Proficiency in maintaining caseloads, documenting services, and managing data for compliance.

    + Knowledge of the challenges and barriers faced by first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students.

    + Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective relationships with diverse student populations, faculty, and staff.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience with TRIO programs or other federal college access and success initiatives.

    + Experience in collegiate teaching, research mentorship, or coordinating undergraduate research programs.

    + Knowledge of national research presentation opportunities and graduate school funding resources.

    + Familiarity with non-cognitive coaching strategies including motivation, advocacy, and goal tracking.

    + Former participant in a TRIO or similar program preferred.

    Conditions of Employment

    + This is a full-time, in-office position located on the campus of Old Dominion University.

    + Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    + Must be available to work occasional evening and weekend events, as well as overnight travel for conferences and student trips.

    The hiring range for this position is $57,000-$60,000.
