    Position Description

    TheDepartment of Sociology (https://www.soci.txst.edu/) at Texas State University invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank with a required area of specialization in aging and dementia and a preferred area of specialization in quantitative methods. The appointment will begin Fall 2026. Research, teaching, and service expectations are commensurate with tenure expectations in the department. Scholarly achievement commensurate with career stage will be evaluated.

     

    Candidates are required to have a record of, or demonstrated potential for, successful teaching of courses in aging or dementia and with a preference for also being able to teach quantitative methods. A PhD in sociology, gerontology, applied gerontology, aging studies, or dementia studies by August 2026 is required. A background in sociological knowledge and perspectives is required. The Department houses an interdisciplinary online graduate program in Dementia and Aging Studies ( MSDA ), and preference will be given to candidates with a record of or demonstrated potential for teaching online courses that could strengthen the MSDA program. Preference will be given to candidates with an active research agenda in dementia or cognitive aging and who demonstrate the ability to obtain external funding.

     

    The Department of Sociology at Texas State University has faculty engaging in a wide-ranging array of specialties comprised of both quantitative and qualitative methods. The faculty are publishing research of national and international significance and take pride in their strong teaching reputation. The Department of Sociology offers BA, BS, MA, and MS degrees in sociology and applied sociology. The department also offers an interdisciplinary online MS in Dementia and Aging Studies ( MSDA ) – the first program of its kind in the United States, as well as interdisciplinary MA and MS degrees in Sustainability Studies.

    Required Qualifications

    + PhD in sociology, gerontology, applied gerontology, aging studies, or dementia studies by August 2026.

    + Record of, or demonstrated potential for, successful teaching of courses in aging or dementia.

    + A background in sociological knowledge and perspectives.

    + Teaching, research, and service expectations commensurate with tenure expectations in the department.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Specialization in and preference for teaching quantitative methods.

    + Record of or demonstrated potential for teaching online courses that could strengthen the MSDA program.
