Position Description
TheDepartment of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education, and School Psychology ( CLAS ) i (https://www.txst.edu/clas.html) n the College of Education at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution ( HSI ) located in San Marcos, Texas invites applications for anAssistant or Associate Professor of Adult, Professional, and Community Education( APCE ) beginning in August 2026. The program is seeking an outstanding candidate to join us in preparing reflective and transformative, educators, leaders, and scholars in our programs in APCE and Human Resource Development ( HRD ) and Organizational Learning.
Position:This position involves teaching graduate-level courses in APCE , maintaining an active and productive research agenda with national and international visibility; mentoring doctoral students and supervising dissertations; seeking external funding to support research and student development; and providing service to the program, department, college, university, and the broader educational leadership profession. The role also involves administrative leadership of the doctoral or master’s program, with responsibility for student recruitment, advising, engagement with program partners, course scheduling, coordination of graduate assistants, and overall program vitality.
Program:The APCE program educates scholar/practitioners who work in a broad array of settings worldwide. APCE prepares reflective scholars who teach, develop, and manage adult educational programs and conduct applied research for the improvement of practice. In addition to a common core curriculum emphasizing adult learning and development, program administration, leadership, learning design and implementation, evaluation, research methodology, and multicultural perspectives in postsecondary and adult education, APCE offers specialized curricular concentrations in Continuing and Community Education, Workplace Learning, and Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language. Department:The CLAS Department serves approximately 975 students seeking undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Professional Counseling ( COUN ), Educational and Community Leadership ( EDCL ), Adult, Professional, and Community Education ( APCE ), School Psychology ( SPSY ), Student Affairs in Higher Education ( SAHE ), and Integrated Studies ( INTS ). The CLAS Department provides high quality undergraduate and graduate education to promote significant transformational changes in communities, schools, organizations, and institutions locally and globally. Guided by expert faculty who are deeply engaged in innovative research and dedicated to student success, CLAS students grow into leaders and changemakers in schools, communities, and organizations across Texas and beyond. Required Qualifications
At the assistant professor level:
+ An earned doctorate in Adult Education or closely related field by employment date of August 2026
+ Experience as an educator of adults
+ A record of, or demonstration of the potential for, research and publication at the national and/or international levels in the APCE field
+ A record of, or demonstration of the potential for, securing external funding for research (e.g., applying for scholarships or other internal funding, small or medium-sized grants, evidence of taking a grant-writing course or expressed interest in seeking external funding in letter of intent)
+ Academic preparation for teaching courses in adult, professional, and community education/human resource development and organizational learning per the Standards of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education
+ Evidence of record or potential for high-quality doctoral dissertation chairing/research advising
At the associate professor level:
+ An earned doctorate in Adult Education or closely related field
+ A record of teaching a variety of adult, professional, and community education/human resource development and organizational learning courses, per the Standards of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education, at the expected level for associate professor
+ A record of positive teaching evaluations (required document upload)
+ A sustained record of research and publication related to adult, professional, and community education at the national or international levels
+ Experience teaching in higher education at the expected level for associate professor
+ Leadership or service with relevant professional organizations and/or academic journals
+ A documented record of securing external funding for research or program development (e.g. evidence of applying for small, medium or large external private or federal grants, awarding and management of external funding projects)
+ A record of service on dissertation/thesis committees
+ Interest in and commitment to academic program coordination as evidenced by leadership record or letter of intent to serve as program coordinator
To be eligible for hire at the associate rank, the candidate must meet the requirements for that rank as established by the College of Education at Texas State University.
Preferred Qualifications
At the assistant professor level:
+ Experience in program/curriculum leadership
+ Experience teaching courses in adult, professional, and community education/human resource development and organizational learning
+ Preparation and/or experience teaching graduate courses in quantitative research methodologies
+ Experience with/potential to build partnerships with community or work organizations
+ Record of positive teaching evaluations or evidence of effective teaching (optional document upload)
+ Experience working collaboratively with faculty in teaching and/or research activities
+ A record of mentoring and supervising student research
+ A documented record of securing external funding for research or program development
+ Experience collaborating with students on research, publications and/or professional presentations
+ Preparation, research or experience teaching digital learning courses
+ Interest in and commitment to academic program coordination as evidenced by leadership record or letter of intent to serve as program coordinator
At the associate professor level:
+ The ability to teach a variety of adult education courses including graduate courses in quantitative methodology
+ Experience building research/education partnerships with community/work organizations
+ Experience working collaboratively with faculty in teaching and/or research activities
+ Evidence of successful academic program leadership
+ Experience with graduate student recruitment
+ Experience collaborating with students on research, publications and/or professional presentations
+ Preparation, research or experience teaching digital learning courses
