    Job Description

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    Ability to repair and maintain gasoline and diesel-powered buses, trucks, and other automotive vehicles. This includes all engine, mechanical, powertrain, and electrical components. Also, will repair, service, and maintain skid loaders, tractors, riding mowers, and small engines of building and grounds maintenance equipment. Responds to and performs roadside repairs as needed.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

     

    Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and engine problems in buses, trucks, and vehicles of the District’s fleet.

     

    Overhaul and rebuild engines, transmissions, differentials, brake systems, and other major components by repair and replacement of parts. Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear.

     

    Repairs or replaces parts such as fuel systems, exhaust systems, maintains and adjusts emission control systems.

     

    Repair and rebuild generators, alternators, starters, and all other electrical components utilizing testing equipment as required.

     

    Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panels.

     

    Relines and adjusts all types of brake systems, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, and replaces coil and leaf spring assemblies.

     

    Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.

     

    Fabricates or modifies metal and other parts and equipment as needed.

     

    Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.

     

    Performs all required preventative maintenance and regular bus safety inspections.

     

    Substitutes as a bus driver when necessary.

     

    Reads, understands, and complies with appropriate MSDS, confined space, hazardous chemical signs, and lockout/tagout information.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

     

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. CDL with passenger, air brake, and the ‘S’ endorsement within 30 days of hire. Must pass DOT Medical Exam. Will be included in the DOT random Drug and Alcohol testing.

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and to express ideas clearly and concisely.

     

    ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS

     

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

    Knowledge of and ability to use automotive and electrical diagnostic equipment. Must be able to use the computer to log on to the internet, process work orders and time tracking, and to enter accounting information. Able to retrieve and print information from various computer programs when needed. Proficient with gas cutting torches, and electric and wire welders.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.

     

    The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.

     

    The employee is occasionally required to smell.

     

    The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

     

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions, and extreme heat.

     

    The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

     

    The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.

    OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

    Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to the achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
