Job Description
Job Summary:
This position provides impartial and accurate interpretation or transliteration of information into American Sign Language, Sign Systems, and spoken English for deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing communities. This position provides expertise and technical assistance to agencies and interpreters/interveners regarding accessibility for all students. This position coordinates, schedules, and directs all interpreter services for prospective and current students for ADR interpreters team. This position also leads efforts to promote equity and inclusion by advancing best practices that support and empower the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community within educational and institutional settings.
Job Duties:
+ ASL interpreting and/or transliteration services for Deaf, DeafBlind, and hard-of-hearing students, prioritizing American Sign Language based on each student's language preference.
+ Coordinate all interpreter services for prospective and current students.
+ Lead efforts to promote equity and inclusion by advancing best practices that support and empower the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community within educational and institutional settings.
+ Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $26.95 - $39.34 hourly.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID): Certificate of Interpretation and Certificate of Transliteration **OR** (RID) Comprehensive Skills Certificate **OR** National Association of the Deaf Proficiency Certificate Level III or higher (IV or V) **AND** 2 years experience as a sign language interpreter.
+ Skills sufficient both written and verbal for effective communication.
+ Skills in forecasting, synthesizing, and extracting meaning in another’s language, spoken or signed, and producing an equivalent message into an intelligible form for all clientele.
+ Skills in simultaneous mental and physical processing of auditory and visual information and formulation of an accurate interpretation of another’s intent, spirit, and sophistication of language.
+ Current working knowledge and understanding of computer hardware and software used as assistive technology (e.g. MS Office applications, Read & Write Gold, Adobe Pro, JAWS, etc.).
+ The ability to work independently and as part of an interpreting team.
+ Ability to identify and accommodate DHH individuals’ language preferences and comprehension level, including attention to dialect and register.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ AAS degree from a recognized interpreting program and 4 years experience as a sign language interpreter.
+ Demonstrated ability to be well organized in a multi-faceted, multi-task environment.
+ Demonstrated ability to work independently, follow up on activities without supervision, and develop effective procedures for work projects to meet deadlines with strong attention to detail.
+ Ability to identify and accommodate deaf/hard of hearing students/customers’ language preferences and comprehension level.
+ Basic understanding of issues and policies related to accessibility, including Section 508, ADA, and principles of Universal Design for Learning, copyright, and other laws.
+ The ability to work within a team; be amenable to cross-training; and build good working relationships with other staff, faculty, students, and the general public.
