    Summary The purpose of the position is to provide clinical and administrative support to the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Services related to patient care activities provided by the physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and recreational therapists within the service. Responsible for a variety of technical, medical, and administrative work for veterans in VA Northern California Healthcare System of all ages scheduled for diagnosis, treatments, and health care. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to the following: Responds to all callers' needs with appropriate reply (s) including but not limited to, fielding questions, facilitating scheduling of patients, returning patient calls as needed, taking messages, etc. Must have thorough knowledge of all Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service clinics. Completes appropriate forms and works with BDMS clerical staff to schedule/cancel patient appointments. Schedules patients based on pre-determined prioritization criteria. Must be able to understand the criteria and apply the knowledge correctly. Notifies patients of rescheduled appointments if necessary. Prepares new patient forms for each clinic day. Maintains files with efficiency; filing, routing, and culling as necessary. Prepares documents as needed, i.e., reports, exercise handouts. Independently orders needed supplies and restocks clinic rooms as necessary. Calls patients from waiting area back to exam/procedure room. Demonstrates basic knowledge of VA benefit eligibility. Independently refers eligibility and benefits questions to correct office in a timely. Incumbent will assist the Administrative Support Assistant with the performance of Timekeeping in VATAS to include, but not limited to, entering employee work tours, accurately and timely posting annual leave, sick leave, authorized absence, etc. Assists Physicians, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Recreational Therapists with treatments under direct supervision of a Therapist or Physician. Assists with administering clinical tests mild measures as directed by and under direct supervision of a Therapist or Physician. Assists with set up of clinical equipment as needed. This includes the unpacking of assistive devices and other equipment used by the service and/or provided to patients through the service. Performs basic fitting of assistive devices to patients and provides patient education the use of the equipment. Orders and monitors supply of assistive devices for all clinics under the purview of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Assists with patient groups, facilitating participation of group members and assisting with the implementation of exercise programs. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Providing administrative support to a health department such as Scheduling patient appointments, Maintaining and preparing documents and files, Ordering office/clinic supplies, and Timekeeping; Providing clinical support to a health department such as Assisting Physicians/Clinical Staff with treatments and tests under direct supervision, and Assisting with setting up clinical equipment. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed six full months of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position of Health Technician (OA). This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have equivalent combinations of specialized experience as described above AND successfully completed graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position of Health Technician (OA). You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Clinical Data Collection/Documentation Customer Service (Clerical/Technical) Medical Information Patient Care Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work involves periods of standing, walking, prolonged sitting, reaching, use of screw drivers and pliers, bending, carrying moderate weight, such as used in restocking or assembling durable medical equipment (i.e. wheelchairs). Work also involves the use of a computer for scheduling, and the use of other office equipment such as printers, copiers, fax machine and typewriters.
