Description
Our client is looking for a Controller to lead financial operations within a construction-focused organization in Bay City, Michigan. This role will play a pivotal part in ensuring accurate accounting processes, comprehensive financial reporting, and effective cost management. The ideal candidate will combine strategic financial expertise with hands-on experience in cost accounting, budgeting, and operational analysis.
Responsibilities:
• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow forecasts.
• Ensure adherence to accounting standards and regulatory requirements while maintaining strong internal controls.
• Develop and implement cost accounting systems to monitor project expenses, labor costs, and overhead allocations.
• Collaborate with project managers to analyze job costs, evaluate profitability, and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements.
• Lead the development of annual budgets and provide financial insights for project bids and proposals.
• Manage construction-specific financial tasks, such as work-in-progress accounting, percent-of-completion calculations, and progress billing.
• Oversee payroll processes, ensuring compliance with labor laws and accurate job cost allocation.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering growth and ensuring timely execution of financial responsibilities.
• Partner with leadership and operations teams to provide actionable financial guidance and support strategic decision-making.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in the construction industry preferred.
• Proficiency in cost accounting, job costing, and financial reporting preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and strong data analysis capabilities.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments.
• Familiarity with construction-related accounting practices, including work-in-progress and contract billing.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.
