The Executive Director, Information Technology plans, develops and directs the operation of technology information systems. Additionally, the incumbent establishes and administers strategies, policies and goals for the assigned area/s.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Works with leadership for the development of competitive strategic plans to achieve the organization’s mission of excellence. Utilizes the University technology platform to analyze service efficiency and financial productivity and make recommendations on operational improvements. Focuses on productivity management such as labor budget and productivity/process analyses and improvement with decision support and ongoing performance improvement support. Collaborates with leadership and Finance to outline strategic technology requirements for major capital expenditures that are recommended in future fiscal years, determined through a strategic planning process. Oversees Information Technology’s support services, growth, metrics, human resource and financial functions as they relate to the University of Miami and affiliated organizations. Keeps senior leadership informed of technology barriers, advancements, opportunities and resource requirements to execute strategic initiatives. Directs the development/maintenance of IT strategic planning, workforce and resource allocation, while maintaining a forward looking vision and strategy. Oversees the management and coordination of activities for assigned enterprise-wide information technology projects to include an efficient and timely conclusion. Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with University policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessment, implements, and monitors controls.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
The Executive Director of Information Technology provides strategic and operational leadership for IT support personnel embedded within each of the university’s schools and colleges. This role ensures the delivery of consistent, high-quality IT services aligned with institutional goals while addressing the unique needs of individual academic units.
+ Provide strategic oversight and direction for IT technicians embedded within each school/college, ensuring alignment with university-wide IT policies, standards, and initiatives.
+ Serve as the primary liaison between central IT leadership and academic units to coordinate service delivery, resource planning, and support models.
+ Develop and implement consistent service delivery standards and performance metrics across all embedded IT teams.
+ Foster a culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement across decentralized IT support functions.
+ Ensure the embedded IT teams are equipped with appropriate tools, training, and resources to support instructional, research, and administrative technologies.
+ Partner with deans, academic leadership, and faculty to understand and address school/college-specific technology needs.
+ Promote alignment with cybersecurity, data governance, and compliance policies.
+ Coordinate hiring, training, and professional development plans for embedded IT staff in collaboration with college and HR leadership.
+ Manage budgets, service agreements, and performance assessments related to embedded IT operations.
+ Lead initiatives to assess and improve user satisfaction and service effectiveness across schools/colleges.
Department Specific Qualifications
Education:
Master’s degree in a technology or business field preferred
Certification and Licensing:
Project management or quality control experience certification is preferred (e.g. PMP, Six Sigma)
Experience:
Experience working with university faculty in a teaching and research setting is highly desired.
Experience managing distributed teams is desired.
Experience working with vendors required.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
+ Ability to envision multiple solutions to a problem.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills desired.
+ Ability to communicate with people who have varying degree of technical knowledge (e.g. from non-technical people to highly-technical people) desired.
