    Position Description

    This position is located in the Parks and Recreation Department. The Equipment Operator Sr. - Parks/Grounds & Landscaping operates large gasoline and/or diesel-powered equipment for digging, mowing, landscaping, transporting materials and equipment. Performs a variety of maintenance and construction activities. Performs related duties as required.

Parks offers cultural arts and fitness classes, dog parks and nature programs and 16,000 acres of open space, including 121 parks and 19 greenways.     Typical Duties

    + Operates various equipment with a gross combined vehicle weight over 26,000 lbs. and/or towing a vehicle over 10,000 lbs. GVW.

    + Regularly Operates, Cleans, and Maintains all tools, equipment and various heavy equipment including but not limited to the following:

    + Boom Trucks

    + Skid Steer

    + Mini-Excavators

    + Bush Hogs (Standard, Bat wing and Side Arm Bush Hogs)

    + Stump Grinders

    + Chippers

    + Various mowers including the 5900 Large Area Mowers.

    + Dump Trucks w/ Trailer.

    + Grades and prepares athletic fields and courts.

    + Loads trucks, lays sod and does related work for reclaiming and establishing turf area.

    + Mixes, pours, and finishes concrete.

    + Waters, plants, transplants, and cultivates flora including using herbicides and chemicals.

    + Works with a tree crew trimming and/or removing large trees and brush.

    + Installs and repairs playground equipment, signs, fences, guardrails, and related items.

    + Runs weekend crews.

    + Runs project crews.

    + Can be assigned duties of a supervisor when they are not available.

    Minimum Qualifications

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Eighth (8th) grade education and one (1) year of grounds maintenance experience

    LICENSE REQUIRED

    Valid Driver License

     

    Note: Must obtain a Class A license in first 6 months and this position is subject to Random Drug tests.

     

    Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

     

    Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

     

    Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    + Experience operating tractors, lawn & grounds maintenance equipment

    + Experience mowing grass and trimming trees, bushes, and shrubs

    + Knowledge and skill to clean, service and repair small equipment such as blowers, string trimmers, chain saws, etc.
