About this Job
LSU Shreveport seeks a full-time Undergraduate Academic Advisor for the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The CEHD Advisor will report directly to the Associate Dean and will work closely with the Dean, Department Chairs, and Academic Staff. The primary duties will be to advise undergraduate students in the CEHD, assuring adherence to catalog requirements.
Responsibilities:
+ Mentor and advise students in all disciplines within the College:Education, Health Science/Public Health, Psychology, Leadership Studies, and Licensed Practical Nursing
+ Meet with students to discuss career goals, review specific study plans for their selected major, and ensure successful pre-registration for classes
+ Collect and maintain data related to the advising activities and their effectiveness
+ Work in partnership with the Director of Academic Advising, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success Initiatives, and instructors of the First Year Experience courses
+ Serve as a liaison with various student Support Services such as the Student Success Center, Career Services, Counseling Services, and Disability Services
+ Assist as requested at on-campus recruiting events hosted by Recruitment, Events Management, and the College
+ Limited and infrequent travel to training and/or events at external locations such as another LSU system campus or state/national conference
+ Occasional evening and weekend work hours may be required
+ Collaborating with the Deans, Department Chairs, and academic staff to facilitate college and department strategic initiatives, particularly student engagement initiatives
+ Working closely with the Deans, Chairs, and Admissions Office to support recruiting efforts
+ Develop presentations, conduct group advising workshops, and design activities that provide additional academic support for CEHD students
+ Assist first year students who experience academic challenges during the first year of college
Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor's degree, preferably in a discipline listed above, or at least three years of experience working in a student advising or other student-facing support role in higher education. LSUS values skills, experience, and expertise. Candidates who have relevant experience in key job responsibilities are encouraged to apply – a degree is not required if the candidate meets the required years of experience in the job description.
+ Evidence of written and oral communication skills such as tailoring a message to an audience, adapting the communication style and/or method for the context, and knowledge of standard principles of grammar and syntax
+ Ability to take initiative, problem-solve, and function independently
+ Evidence of organizational skills such as attention to detail when preparing or reviewing documents plus experience with filing/storing records electronically
+ Evidence of effective time management skills such as planning, scheduling, prioritization, and minimizing distraction
+ Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with others
+ Responsive to feedback from others
+ Demonstrated ability to use standard office technology such as MS Outlook and Word along with the expectation and ability to learn new software programs
+ Willingness and ability to work the standard work schedule as well as occasional evenings or weekends for events or during weeks when additional student advising work time is needed before the opening of each semester’s registration period
Job Duties and Other Information
Position Characteristics:
This is a 12-month, full-time (40 hour per week) classified sta? position. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
