Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
+ Performs complex mathematical modeling and engineering analysis for total maximum daily loads (TMDLs ), point source waste load allocations, non-point source load allocations, effluent mixing, or other projects, based on field observations, chemical data, hydraulic studies, regional characteristics, etc. These models are mathematical representations of the physical and chemical processes that are being simulated and range in complexity from relatively simple to very complex models. Modeling for a waste load allocation involves the simulation of the hydrology and the chemistry/biology of the receiving water so that the impact of a pollutant discharge can be calculated.
+ Modeling for effluent mixing involves a much more detailed model of the hydrology of a waterway than waste load allocation modeling but does not involve the chemical and biological processes of that water. TMDLs require detailed modeling of both the hydrology and the chemistry/biology characteristics of the waterbody. Point and nonpoint source issues are major factors in the preparation of TMDLs.
+ Prepares scientific papers documenting the results and impacts of each project. A substantial portion of time is devoted to identifying, quantifying and incorporating point and nonpoint source loads into the TMDL.
+ Provides engineering expertise to assist the modeling team in simulating water chemistry. Coordinates survey planning activities in support of TMDL development with the Water Surveys Section.
+ Provides engineering assistance with field survey planning. Assist in determining the types of data to be collected, collection methodology to be used, quality control protocols to be followed, and other field studies to be performed by the Surveys Section.
+ Provide logistical information as needed to the Survey Coordinator.
+ Participate in the reconnaissance survey. Provides an engineering review of the technical reports produced by the Section, regulated facilities, and contractors and recommend approval for submission to EPA or distribution within DEQ.
