    Position: Watercraft Decontamination Program Manager

     

    Status: Full-time Regular (12, months), Non-Exempt

     

    Department: Adirondack Watershed Institute

     

    Reports to: Aquatic Invasive Species Program Director

     

    Salary: $28.50 per hour

    Description:

    The Stewardship Program is an aquatic invasive species spread prevention program that operates at 65+ locations, from May to October, throughout the Adirondack region. The program’s work is centered around providing education to boaters about aquatic invasive species spread prevention methods, as well as performing watercraft inspection and decontamination services to ensure boats meet the clean, drain, and dry standard. The Watercraft Decontamination Program Manager directly supports the AWI Stewardship Team through their efforts to train staff and manage the watercraft decontamination stations.

     

    The Watercraft Decontamination Program Manager will provide training and support to 50+ seasonal Watercraft Inspection Stewards who will be assigned to decontamination sites. This manager will supervise 1-2 seasonal Decontamination Program Assistants during the field season. Beyond seasonal staff management, primary responsibilities will relate to the maintenance and repair of Landa commercial pressure washers and the upkeep of storage sheds and other associated equipment.

     

    The position is based on Paul Smith’s College campus and is not a remote position. This position is a hybrid of both office and field work. Approximately 80% of work time from late March to late October will consist of travel and visits to decontamination sites across the Adirondack Park. A company vehicle will be provided.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    + Responsible for the transportation, maintenance, and repairs of hot-water commercial pressure washers (Landa ECOS, Landa MHC, Landa PHW).

    + Responsible for the maintenance and repairs of water reclamation systems, water transfer pumps, personal protective equipment, signs, and safety equipment.

    + Responsible for planning, setting up, and dismantling watercraft decontamination sites throughout the Adirondacks.

    + Coordinate with the AIS Program Director when working with state agencies and partners to execute various watercraft decontamination program elements including permitting, reporting, logistical operations, safety, and training.

    + Coordinate and lead the annual watercraft decontamination training for AWI.

    + Assist in mid-season training and supervising of seasonal Watercraft Inspection Stewards, to include informal meetings and site visits.

    + Supervise, coach, and evaluate the seasonal Decontamination Assistants (1-2).

    + Assist in the recruitment process for AWI seasonal staff, including helping to conduct interviews and attending recruitment events.

    + Oversee the maintenance of all AWI owned vehicles and watercraft.

    + Develop and refine program protocols and procedures to enhance the quality of provided services.

    + Assist in preparing annual reports for the Stewardship Program.

    + Perform other tasks as assigned to support AWI’s mission.

    Qualifications:

    + A degree in natural resources, environmental science, or a related field; and/or the completion of a trades program - preferred but not required.

    + Interest in the mission of AWI and the work of the aquatic invasive species spread prevention program.

    + Intermediate to advanced skills in the following disciplines: mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.

    + Proven ability to supervise, train, and evaluate seasonal employees.

    + Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.

    + Experience working with logistics and operations.

    + Experience driving full-sized pickup trucks, to include connecting and towing heavy trailers at highway speeds.

    + Leadership and decision-making experience.

    + Ability to work weekends and holidays as needed.

    + Ability to effectively communicate with the public to professionally represent the principles of the AWI and the College.

    + Comfortable operating commercial pressure washers and training seasonal staff on their usage.

    + Knowledge of invasive species and spread mechanisms is a plus.

    + Familiarity with outdoor water-based recreation is a plus.

    + Ability to lift 50 pounds and maneuver program equipment such as wheel mounted pressure washers and wastewater collection pads.

    + Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier and AWI, which will enable authorization to drive College-owned vehicles.

    Physical Requirements:

    Environmental Conditions

     

    + Work is of a hybrid nature of both indoor office settings with normal temperature ranges as well as noise levels as well as in the field. Field work is primarily performed between May and October throughout the Adirondack region. This field work includes variability in temperature and noise levels.

     

    Lifting and Carrying

     

    + Frequent lifting and carrying of equipment weighing 50 lbs.

    + Equipment is of various shapes so may require unusual gripping points.

    + On occasion may lift up to 50+ lbs.

     

    Mobility

     

    + Prolonged sitting majority of the workday to complete responsibilities during November through April.

    + During May through October majority of the day will be a combination of sitting, walking and driving.

    + Ability to bend, stoop, and kneel to pick up items, as necessary.

    + Climbing various staircases and walking moderate distances across the campus to engage in meetings and/or presentations.

    + Walking moderate distances at the various inspection stations throughout the Adirondack region.

     

    Dexterity and Hand-Eye Coordination

     

    + Manual dexterity for handling both small office-related objects as well as tools and equipment used in the field.

    + Fine motor skills for work performed on laptop.

    + Moderate need to reach overhead or below shoulder level to perform work duties.

    Sensory Requirements

    + Good vision, including color vision, with corrective lenses as necessary.

    + Good hearing with assistive devices as necessary.
