Description of Job
The Nurse III (Nurse Supervisor) position supervises, guides, and directs professional skilled nursing care for the incarcerated offender in either an outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house setting for acute care, chronic support and emergency assessment and interventions as indicated. This position may be a unit supervisor responsible for a smaller clinic, a shift within a larger complex facility, or a supervisor in a specialized clinical treatment unit. This position may be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays, and to perform nurse on-call or call-back duties. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
+ Documents both handwritten or electronically in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive inmate medical records.
+ Delivers patient education to include demonstrating and explaining self-care techniques, anticipating possible complications of treatments, informing about desired and undesirable side effects of medication and treatments, and listening to offender concerns.
+ Delivers patient care in a clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house setting individualized to offenders' diagnoses and needs.
+ Performs routine and emergency physical and emotional assessments of inmates during triage, sickline, and emergency situations using basic nursing skills, physical assessment skills, and nursing protocols.
+ Promotes and is accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
+ Responsible for payroll, scheduling, and Performance Management Plans (PMP); accountable for completion of shift responsibilities for 8-16 hours per day; point person for daily operations and decisions in a work setting; assigns nursing staff, coordinates staff orientation, and rearranges and reorganizes unit routines, assists in hiring, participates in promotional examinations and disciplinary recommendations.
+ Recommends, implements, and monitors compliance with policies and procedures; functions as an on-call supervisor and as such arranges for coverage and approve overtime.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Applicant must possess a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

+ Applicant must have three (3) years of full-time experience providing patient care as a Registered Nurse. W ork experience less than full time will be prorated.

+ One year or more of nursing supervisory experience. Supervisory experience includes the ability to affect pay, status and tenure of subordinate employees;
+ Nursing experience as a Registered Nurse in a correctional environment;

The CDOC shall not hire nor promote anyone who may have contact with an offender who has engaged in sexual abuse which includes acts, activity, and sexual behavior, in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents.

+ Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

+ Swing a baton in a striking technique;
+ Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
+ Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
+ Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;
+ Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
+ Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
+ Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
+ Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
+ Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;

+ Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

+ Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;
+ TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.
The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. Employees (see exception below) may use marijuana in their personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance, including marijuana. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass. Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.
