    Job Description

    Title: School Social Worker - Junior High School

    Qualifications:

    + Effective communication and problem solving skills

    + Ability to work collaboratively in an educational setting

    + Qualified to be employed as a School Social Worker per NYS Education Department guidelines

    + Certified by the NYS Education Department as a School Social Worker and maintenance of such license throughout appointment

    + Holds a Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university

    + Good knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of school social work

    + Ability to understand procedures and functions in a school system with regard to special education

    + Working knowledge of community resources applicable to school social work

    + Be able to work and communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, outside agencies, and other groups.

    + Ability to evaluate, plan, and execute treatments/assistance to students and families

    Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:

    + Attend meetings as needed

    + General School Social Worker assignments

    + Counsels students with emotional and/or educational disabilities in grades K-12

    + Serves as liaison among home, school and community, developing relationships necessary for improving learning conditions for a child.

    + Serves as member of building and district-wide pupil personnel service teams, primary project, etc.

    + Maintains required records and is responsible for the availability of information to appropriate and qualified persons (client records, ADC, free lunch programs, migrant children, foster children, etc.

    + Understands and updates students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and/or 504 Plans as needed

    + Participates in CSE and 504 Plan meetings

    + Assumes responsibility for social service practices and reporting as required by law and upon referrals from teachers, special service personnel and administrators.

    + Consults with teachers in the development of plans to improve “in school” relationships of pupils, including but not limited to, interviews within the school, interviews within the home environment, agency consultation, provides relevant data to appropriate personnel, suggests materials and techniques for children with concerns related to their social and emotional wellbeing, etc.

    + Serves as member of building level teams including but not limited to, instructional support, crisis management and risk assessment.

    + Provides direct service to individuals and small groups within the home (short term individual and family counseling) and within the school (individual counseling with students, consultation in parent conferences, special service to groups, etc.)

    + Develops and coordinates special projects available to youth through local, state, or federal grants.

    + Acts as liaison between school and community health and social welfare agencies.

    + Administers district’s free lunch program, including the publication of eligibility data, processing of applications, maintenance of accurate records, etc.

    + Confers with parents/guardians as necessary and makes recommendations to them with regard to services for children

    + Serves as liaison between school and community agencies, such as health and social welfare agencies, family court, and probation

    + Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through continued reading and study and through membership on building/district committees and in professional organizations.

    + Performs other such duties which fall within the role of the School Social Worker as deemed necessary by the Director of Educational and Support Services, Superintendent of Schools, or other related administrator.

    + Maintain Data Security as applicable.

    + Maintain confidentiality with staff, students, and family information.

     

    Reports to: Building Principal and Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Services

     

    Salary: Minimum starting salary $48,502 (negotiable based on experience) as per the contract between Victor Central Schools and the VTA Unit
