Job Description:
MIKEL, Inc. is seeking a Systems Engineer II to support the Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS) program for the U.S. Navy. This role provides full lifecycle systems engineering, integration, software infrastructure support, and subject matter expertise across various components of the SWFTS architecture. The ideal candidate has experience with Navy tactical systems, software tools, containerized environments, and collaborative engineering support in a classified setting.
Position: SWFTS Engineer (Systems Engineer II or III)
Key Responsibilities:
+ Provide systems engineering support for SWFTS infrastructure and tactical applications, including design reviews, requirements tracking, configuration control, and system validation efforts.
+ Offer development support on various tools within the SWFTS project, including but not limited to MicroSWFTS toolkit, NTPRO, and ASIST, using multiple programming and scripting languages such as Java, Python, BASH, YAML, and Gradle.
+ Deliver containerization and orchestration support aligned with SWFTS program objectives, using technologies including Podman and Kubernetes variants (e.g., K3S, K8S, RKE2).
+ Participate in the integration, installation, and testing of SWFTS systems onboard platforms and within shore-based labs.
+ Interface with government sponsors, NUWC divisions, and other defense contractors to support SWFTS planning, development, and deployment efforts.
+ Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) during technical exchanges across the SWFTS community, providing insight on infrastructure and architecture considerations.
+ Support the development and maintenance of documentation, including interface control documents (ICDs), test procedures, and software release artifacts.
+ Troubleshoot integration issues, analyze system behavior, and support root cause analysis with detailed reporting.
+ Assist in the creation and evaluation of Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) and software versioning strategies for SWFTS tactical components.
Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, OR 10 - 12 years of experience as a Fire Control Technician (SS).
+ 5-7 years of experience in systems or software engineering within a DoD OR naval warfare environment equivalency.
+ Proven experience with software tools and environments used in SWFTS, including scripting and development with Java, Python, YAML, and BASH.
+ Well-versed in software architecture, particularly in modular, containerized defense systems.
+ Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Podman) and orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, K3S, RKE2).
+ Strong understanding of configuration management and systems lifecycle processes within DoD frameworks.
+ Experience supporting Navy combat systems or related undersea warfare programs is highly desirable.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present technical content to mixed audiences.
+ Ability to work independently and in collaborative environments with cross-functional teams.
+ Must be a U.S. Citizen and have the ability to possess an active DoD Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Direct experience supporting SWFTS tools (MicroSWFTS, ASIST, NTPRO).
+ BYG-1 CCS Experience TI-14 or above.
+ Familiarity with Agile or DevSecOps environments.
+ Understanding of NAVSEA and NUWC engineering practices and acquisition standards.
+ Experience with Navy labs, tactical networks, or classified development environments.
+ Certifications in relevant technologies (e.g., Kubernetes, Red Hat, AWS) are a plus.
