    The City of Boise is currently accepting applications for the position of Risk & Safety Coordinator.     This position leads the development and implementation of citywide safety programs, conducts site and facility inspections, develops and delivers impactful training, and serves as a strategic safety consultant to promote a culture of health and safety citywide and supports departments in promoting safe work environments—particularly in field and industrial settings. Ideal candidates bring strong technical knowledge in occupational safety, with certifications such as CSP or CIH preferred.

    Essential Functions

    Develops, implements and evaluates various risk management components and programs to mitigate risk for the city. Plans, develops and implements occupational regulatory safety, health and other compliance programs.

     

    Interacts with various city employees and leadership levels to advise, facilitate and implement risk mitigation recommendations. Conducts risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify potential safety risks and develop mitigation strategies. Conducts worksite inspections, inspects facilities and equipment and records observations to identify workplace hazards and evaluate compliance.

     

    Designs industrial hygiene surveys to assess areas of potential exposure and uses industrial hygiene equipment to monitor the atmosphere, noise and other potential employee hazards. Recommends revisions to policy and processes to city departments. Regularly reviews program effectiveness, completes data analysis for trends and provides regular reports to supervisor and management. Coordinates programs, trains supervisors and employees, tracks compliance and creates reports.

     

    Provides risk mitigation consultation to management. Reviews building and project plans for regulatory compliance, liability exposures and general safety. Completes regulatory and best practice research on requirements, standards, practices, equipment and compliance devices or methods. Works with departments, equipment vendors and manufacturers to resolve dangerous work situations. Completes ergonomic evaluations. Responds to vehicle and personal injury incidents and complete accident and loss investigations.

     

    Manages the city's safety program. Trains employees on safety practices and ensures compliance with safety regulations. Develops training materials and conducts training sessions for employees. Contracts with training providers to complete required trainings. Recommends, develops and reviews emergency preparedness plans. Prepares and conducts drills to evaluate effectiveness. Makes adjustments to plans and provides recommendations for improvement.

    Requirements

    Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

     

    Bachelor's degree in industrial safety, business or health-related field and three years of experience providing training and program administration in safety, occupational health, regulatory compliance or emergency preparedness, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

     

    Knowledge of: codes and regulations for safety and risk management; current safety principles and techniques; industrial hygiene equipment; safe operating requirements of equipment, machines and tools; measures for detecting hazards and preventing injuries; and general standards of the life-safety codes.

     

    Ability to: interpret technical codes, structural diagrams, plans and specifications; obtain certification to instruct various safety-related education classes, such as CPR, First Aid and Defensive Driving; obtain cooperation from property owners, civic leaders and professional groups in providing facilities and services for emergency preparedness; maintain supplies, rations, tools and inventory necessary in responding to emergencies; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

     

    Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

     

    Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

     

    Five years of experience including two or more years of direct experience developing safety and compliance programs and developing and conducting safety training and inspections.

     

    Post-secondary (academic or vocational) training and experience in instructional systems design and training delivery and CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) certification.

     

    Licensing And Other Requirements

     

    Valid state-issued driver's license.

    Applicants must be able to pass:

    City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

     

    Driving Record Check

     

    Criminal Justice Information System background check (CJIS)

     

    Working Conditions

    Physical Efforts

    While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision and distance vision. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

    Working Environment

    The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Navigates a variety of surfaces, including but not limited to uneven surfaces, slippery surfaces, stairs, ladders, and areas under construction.

     

    This position works: normal business hours, but must respond to call-ins when accidents and injuries occur.
