    Position Summary

    The current vacancies are in the Sheriff's Department.

     

    This is an unclassified, limited duration position.

     

    The Community Service Officer will perform designated law enforcement related duties in support of licensed and non-licensed law enforcement personnel in the areas of patrol, detention, court security, warrant or process services; to facilitate communication between law enforcement staff and residents; and to perform related duties as assigned.

    Examples of Work Performed

     

    + Patrol parks, lakes, rivers, and open space areas using squad cars, boats, snowmobiles, four wheelers and other equipment.

    + Perform public relations work in the community, explain police work and procedures to the public, and assist deputies at crime scenes by directing traffic, controlling onlookers, etc.

    + Complete office duties related to Community Service Officers, such as review and type law enforcement reports, receive and log requests from the public for service, and keep records.

    + Perform public contact duties such as receive and route phone calls; direct visitors to proper locations; conduct security checks at designated locations; and respond to inquiries by phone and in person.

    + Perform non-inmate contact duties such as monitor and process inmate mail, conduct visitor check-ins, maintain supplies in the laundry room and various floors, assist with deliveries to pods, respond to after-hours warrant calls, etc.

    + Monitor radio or video communications.

    + Conduct warrant and criminal history checks and verifications, and office support related to law enforcement duties.

    + Collect, document, and track all property and materials entering and exiting the jail property room. Ensure property follows the established process and procedures. Follow proper policies and procedures for disposal of property.

    + Pick up and deliver reports, evidence, or other items, and maintain supplies and materials for crime prevention programs.

    + Assist deputies in accompanying jurors to meals and lodging, maintain security during deliberations, and run errands or provide services for jurors.

    + Serve legal papers to residents.

    + Conduct recruitment and other community outreach activities to support office initiatives.

    + Depending on assignment, may act as an Animal Control Officer for Contract Cities.

     

    (The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.)

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: High School graduate or the equivalent.

     

    Experience: None.

     

    Substitution: None.

     

    Certifications/Licensure: Valid class D driver's license.

     

    Exam/Screening Process Information

     

    All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for this position will be forwarded to the hiring department/manager for consideration for these limited duration, unclassified positions. Candidates appointed to limited duration, unclassified positions may become eligible for benefits based on schedule. Employment isn't guaranteed beyond the end of this assignment.

    Definition of Unclassified from the Ramsey County Personnel Act:

    Subdivision 1. General. "The appointing authority may discharge employees in the unclassified service with or without cause. Employees in the unclassified service have no right to a grievance appeal from discharge or other disciplinary action under sections 383A.281 to 383A.301. An employee in an unclassified position shall not have tenure but shall be entitled to all benefits associated with tenure such as vacation leave, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits as determined by the county board."
