GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
The Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, is working on a capital project to completely design and build the new Tang Wing. The collection of modern and contemporary art comprises more than 12,000 objects, including painting, works on paper, sculpture, decorative art, and time-based media, most of which is presently located on site. The project requires a complete assessment of the permanent collection that is both on display and in onsite storage, for movement to offsite storage in advance of construction for the Tang Wing.
As the Associate Conservation Preparator, you will fabricate bespoke housings for works of art on paper. In collaboration with Conservators and collections team members, you will assist with hinging, mounting, and framing works of art. You will assist with the assessment, rehousing and packing of artwork being transported and stored as part of the Tang Wing project.
This is a position with an established end-date or time frame. Time frame will begin upon hire: 1 year.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
+ Fabricates custom mats, folders, and other bespoke housing for works of art on paper. Assists with hinging, mounting, and framing of work on paper.
+ Works with conservators, collections team and contractors on the fabrication of supports and protections for works on art on paper during transportation and in storage.
+ Assist with art movement within the Met spaces for assessment, rehousing, and packing.
+ Assists with imaging of objects for documentary purposes..
+ Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
+ BA, BS, or BFA degree required.
+ 5 years working with museum collections with experience handling works on paper preferred.
+ Excellent hand skills, attention to detail, and ability to produce consistent results.
+ Intermediate knowledge of archival materials and best practices in collections care.
+ Formal or on-the-job training and experience in handling and moving artworks required, familiarity with fragile objects preferred.
+ Demonstrated ability to create custom mats, folders, and other housings and to frame and unframe for works on art on paper.
+ Demonstrated ability to adapt and produce high-level results on multiple projects with shifting priorities.
+ Ability to work independently and in collaboration/coordination with collections, conservation, curatorial, and administrative staff.
+ Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds, work on ladders and in awkward spaces.
+ Excellent organizational, management, and communication skills required.
+ Proactive task management required.
+ Familiarity with or willingness to train on the following software: TMS, Adobe Suite, Photoshop and Microsoft Office Suite.
COMPENSATION RANGE:
+ Pay Range: $85,000.00 - $90,000.00 / Annually

The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.
Location Requirements
At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. “Commuting distance” means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the “Tri-state and PA” areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
