About the Role
We’re looking for a dedicated Supervisor to join our team and help us continue delivering the level of care our patients and families deserve. In this role, you’ll be a vital part of our clinical & administrative team, ensuring excellent service, collaboration, and patient outcomes in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The Lab Supervisor will Supervise and coordinate the day-to-day Laboratory Support Department operations including the Hospital Lab, ED/Inpatient, Outreach Services and Clerical Support Services. You will assist the manager in ensuring smooth and efficient operation of the laboratory to provide quality patient care, reliable resulting, and a safe environment. This includes client relations, specimen collection, specimen intake, accessioning/outreach, specimen processing, customer relations, scheduling, registration, result reporting, document management, chain of custody testing and collections.
What You’ll Do
+ Leadership: Responsible for providing guidance to lab support coordinators concerning lab support departmental responsibilities, off site needs, and staff oversight. Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings and distribution of meeting minutes. Reviews turnaround times and volumes to assess staffing needs across all hours of operation. Works with interdepartmental teams to improve processes and systems. Assists with updating policies/procedures and development of new policies/procedures for newly introduced services or processes. Maintains enhanced physician practice, patient and staff relations, and service recovery, creating an environment conducive to maximizing internal and external customer satisfaction.
+ Management of Staff: Provides direction to lab support staff in accordance with ensuring achievement of laboratory and organizational goals and objectives. Responsible for recruiting employees, performing interviews, conducting staff evaluations, providing feedback for employee development, resolve conflict and research, prepare and present corrective action to address employee performance issues, track and follow up on recurring problems. Consults with Human Resources to ensure the appropriate application of HR policies and procedures. Manages staff compliance with employee health requirements. Ensures department staff is proficient in all areas of responsibility and able to shift job duties due to emergencies or departmental needs.
+ Operational Management: Oversees the daily operations of outpatient, emergency department, inpatient, and post analytical operations at the Main Lab. Supervises specimen intake of outreach specimens, client specimens and visiting nurse specimens. Ensures sufficient supplies for the department. Guides Clinical Lab Technologists within the scope of the routing results, specimen collection, and requisition entry.
+ Financial Management : Acts as a liaison with all Saratoga hospital facilities, ensuring sufficient staff coverage both immediately and in the future by participating in the budgeting process. Periodically reviews lab support staffing to determine if schedules reflect patient demand, and works with manager to make appropriate changes. Provides explanation of variances related to FTE overages and month end budget reports. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility through cost and inventory control. Problem solves staffing changes during times of emergency to cover all areas.
+ Quality Assurance: Monitors quality/quantity of patient interaction, accessioning accuracy, and shares data with phlebotomy staff to motivate improvement targeted to positively affect patients’ experiences. Ensures turnaround times are being met. Provides leadership in standardizing lab support processes across all sites. Assists in preparing monthly QA reports. Creates plans to address common quality problems.
+ Safety: Utilizes all safety devices according to guidelines and disposes appropriately. Maintains and assists with environmental cleanliness. Ability to effectively communicate the importance of compliance and safety to other employees. Researches alternative equipment to promote safe practices. Reviews and assists with completion of Employee Incident Reports and Biohazard Exposure packets.
+ Education: Provides direction and support to the Laboratory Support Education Coordinator concerning the development of lab support education. Responsible for managing the development of enhanced staff education in response to quality assurance reports. Performs periodic audits to ensure training and competency assignments are up to date. Oversees and provides support for specimen collection of Saratoga Hospital and SHMG clinical staff. Ensures sites have sufficient coverage for Chain of Custody Collections.

What You Bring
+ Associates Degree preferred. In lieu of degree, high school diploma or equivalent and five to seven years of phlebotomy experience, preferably in a hospital environment, leadership experience required. Certified by ASCP, NHA or AMT. Must have a valid NYS Driver’s License and be able to be approved under the Saratoga Hospital auto insurance policy. Mandatory 10 CEU supervisor approved credits per year.
+ Able to keep abreast of the needs of the lab support department as a whole, taking initiative to formulate plans which will improve organizational efficiency, and patient care.
+ Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
+ Must be able to establish an appropriate and effective rapport with patients, co-workers and medical staff.
+ Fosters a professional environment with a high level of customer service to patients, coworkers, and employees in the organization.
+ Ability to set and manage multiple assignment priorities and work independently, performing diversified duties under conditions of constant interruption.
+ Demonstrate commitment to customer service.
+ Knowledge of Microsoft Office required with emphasis on Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point
