    Job Summary

    UM Orthotics and Prosthetics Center, a Division of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, provides state-of-the-art services to adults and children requiring orthotic and prosthetic devices and is committed to providing outstanding patient care. For over 100 years the University of Michigan Orthotics and Prosthetics Center has provided exceptional service to a diverse patient population and is the largest, free standing O&P facility in the nation. We are an Ambulatory Center, easily accessible on South Industrial Drive and have onsite parking.

     

    We are actively seeking compassionate, enthusiastic, motivated, patient-oriented individuals who will share in the goal of creating the ideal experience for our patients, families and employees. As a Medical Assistant for Orthotics and Prosthetics, you will serve as a positive role model on the clinical team. Your duties will require you to act as a change agent who promotes process improvement and sharing of best practices with the team. Be part of building a culture that promotes teamwork, open and honest communication and collaboration with all customers; internal and external. Coach and support other team members to promote improvement and positive performance, embodying service excellence.

    Responsibilities*

    Provide exceptional customer service to patients and families by performing clinical processes that result in the management of efficient patient flow. Assist in patient care activities and performance improvement projects in order to improve the safety, efficiency and quality in the O&P Clinic.

     

    + Intake: Efficiently and effectively prepares and organizes clinic exam and procedure rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies? also, sterilization/cleaning of equipment, supply stocking/ordering, and maintenance of patient care areas. Document patient vitals, health status, medications list and allergies in the electronic medical record.

    + Clinical Support Processes: Work with a multidisciplinary team caring for patients with amputations, muscle weakness, wounds, and brachial plexus injuries in an outpatient setting.Provides accurate and efficient clinical support processes that include patient preparation for procedures, medication administration, prescription refills, pharmacy insurance authorization, and/or other requests. Provides direct patient care, including but not limited to: diabetic nail debridement and trimming under physician supervision. May facilitate the appointment process with clerical staff (overbooks, or directly schedule). Also perform other assignments such as opening process, supply inventory and patient calls. Able to collaborate with clinicians and physician staff to ensure optimal patient care. Problem solve patient and family care issues. Responding to patient inquiries regarding care and clinic policies and procedures. Facilitating completion of patient forms, correspondence and requests. When necessary, provides secondary support to clinical staff, including generation and completion of all necessary patient visit paperwork.

    + Education and Training: Maintains current competencies and mandatory training. Attends mandatory clinic and hospital training programs. Actively participates in clinic and/or staff meetings.

    + Facilitation: Ability to coordinate use of exam/procedure room space. Able to support multiple providers. Provides assistance with medication preparation, complex procedures and/or specimen collections. Takes initiative in identifying, acting, and following through on problems and tasks.

    + Leadership: Serves as a positive role model and is an integral member of the clinical team. Communication is effective and positive with the entire health care team. Demonstrates proactive problem solving skills and takes the initiative to identify, act, and follow through on problems. Is able to consider the impacts of decisions/changes beyond the immediate work group.

    Required Qualifications*

    + High school diploma or GED

    + Graduation from a medical assistant program or an equivalent combination of education and experience (3-4 years) is necessary.

    + Certified in BLS

    + Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

    + Excellent customer service and communication skills.

    + Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.

    + Ability to take direction and receive feedback.

    + Effective time management skills.

    + Must have documented history of excellent attendance and punctuality.

    + Moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring patients.

    + Demonstrated active listening, written, verbal and information technology skills.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Certification as a Medical Assistant or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + 3-4 years of clinic experience as a Medical Assistant

    + Additional formal education in a health care field

    + Clinical experience in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Orthopedic Surgery and/or Neurosurgery

    + Certified in ACLS

    + Previous experience with EPIC software in a healthcare setting.

    + Demonstrated proficiency in MS Outlook, Skype for Business, Microsoft Word/Excel.

    Union Affiliation

     

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

     

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
