Job Description
Position Summary:The Controller will oversee the organization's financial operations and ensure strong fiscal management. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing audits, and overseeing the finance and contract team. The Controller will collaborate closely with the Senior Controller and at times the CFO and program leadership to support informed financial decision-making.
Essential Accountabilities
Financial Management & Reporting
+ Maintain and oversee the general ledger and all financial transactions using accounting principles.
+ Review of the Trial balance monthly, reviewing account balances and making any necessary adjustments and accruals as needed.
+ Review and approve journal entries for accuracy and appropriate documentation prior to posting.
+ Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, including the Board of Directors.
+ Develop and manage cash flow forecasts and budget-to-actual analyses.
+ Prepare financial statement analysis, such as Revenue and Accounts Receivable analysis.
+ Oversight and review of the Consolidated Fiscal Report (CFR) filings (June and December).
Compliance & Audit
+ Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state regulations, and nonprofit-specific requirements
+ Coordinate and manage the annual independent audit and preparation of IRS Form 990.
+ Maintain internal controls and financial procedures to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy.
Grants & Contract Accounting
+ Track and report on restricted and unrestricted funds, including grant compliance and donor reporting.
+ Collaborate with development and program teams to ensure appropriate allocation of funds.
+ Monitor Grant and Contract reporting deadlines and ensure timely submission of financial reports to funders.
Systems & Staff Management
+ Oversee finance and contract team staff and assist in directing and training staff.
+ Optimize and manage accounting software and financial systems.
+ Provide training and support to program managers regarding financial procedures and budget monitoring.
Other
+ Always maintain confidentiality.
+ Special projects as needed.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s or CPA preferred).
+ Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a nonprofit setting.
+ Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, fund accounting, and regulatory compliance.
+ Experience with accounting software (e.g., Sage intacct, Blackbaud).
+ Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
+ Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ CPA certification or equivalent experience.
+ Experience managing federal and state grants.
+ Knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance and other nonprofit compliance requirements.
