Position Summary
The technician is responsible for the overall slide-scanning functions of the clinical laboratory including the routine operation and basic troubleshooting of the Whole Slide Scanners, retrieval of glass slides to be digitized, QC by visual inspection of the generated Whole Slide Images, and the testing of new software solutions to support the department. This position works under the direction of the supervisor and follows standard laboratory procedures and policies.
Job Responsibilities
+ Coordinate receipt for scanning of glass microscope slides from different sources and assesses quality of slide for scanning; works with requestors as necessary.
+ Operate the Whole Slide Scanners in use by the department.
+ Evaluate workflow to determine optimal slide placement on different high-throughput or low-throughput scanners; maintain scanning prioritization in accordance with established procedure.
+ Review the generated images for quality issues; processes re-scans as necessary.
+ Triages cases based on suitability for digital review, ensuring that images are viable scans for Pathologist review prior to digital distribution.
+ Maintain scanners between vendor preventative maintenance visits, perform calibrations to vendor specs, and work with vendor support team for troubleshooting purposes when necessary.
+ Assist with testing software solutions to support the department.
+ Monitor the department email inbox and address inquiries in a timely manner, prioritizing cases as requested.
+ Work cross-functionally with various departments including IHC, Lab Operations, Pathology Operations, and Pathologists.
+ Follow all Standard Operating Procedures and comply with GLP and safety requirements.
+ Maintain confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with federal, state and local guidelines and regulations.
+ Accepts other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
+ Associate degree with preferred major in Biological and/or Physical Sciences: or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ This role requires a high degree of care and attention with strict adherence to defined clinical testing protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience with whole-slide imaging in support of histopathology data collection and analysis.
+ Familiarity with histology, IHC using auto-stainers and bright field microscopy.
+ Knowledge of laboratory safety and quality control procedures and regulations.
+ Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
+ Effective verbal and written communication skills. Proven attention to detail with effective organizational skills.
+ Effective interpersonal and team skills.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet for business use.
Physical Demands
+ Must possess ability to sit, stand, and/or work at a computer for long periods of time.
+ May have exposure to blood-borne pathogens, extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
+ Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail. Ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.
Training
+ All job specific, safety, and compliance training are assigned based on the job functions associated with this employee.
Other
+ This position requires periodic travel and some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
