    Job Summary

    The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Department of Physics at the University of Michigan invite applications for two LEO Lecturer I positions at 100% effort for the Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 terms. This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025 and end on April 30, 2026.

    Responsibilities*

    These lecturers will teach in the Introductory Physics Courses/Labs. Courses will be assigned based on the department's needs. Applicants should be willing and able to teach any combination of the courses listed below.

    Course Title(s):

    Physics 140/240: General Physics I & II

     

    Physics 141/241: Elementary Laboratory I & II

     

    Biophysics/Physics 150/250: Fundamental Physics for Life Sciences I & II

     

    Physics 151/251: Physics for the Life Sciences Laboratory I & II

     

    In addition to classroom instruction, Lecturers are expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours and handle routine matters related to instruction.

     

    Teaching assignments are subject to change. There may be opportunities to teach more advanced courses based on departmental need.

    Course Objectives:

    140/240: These courses explore and apply fundamental principles of classical mechanics to a wide range of physical systems and environments. Students construct simple models to describe complex phenomena and answer diverse questions about nature, understand electric charge/currents/magnetic fields, and will learn tools and methods to predict motion based on interactions.

     

    150/250: These courses reveal the synergy between these fields and explore fundamental physics principles that are ubiquitous in the life sciences through biological examples. Biology, chemistry, and medicine provide the guiding motivation and context for exploring topics including energy, mechanics, fluids, and thermodynamics.

    Labs:

    Weekly laboratories designed to accompany the intro courses. Students are introduced to experimental methods in science and make observations, do simulations, analyze their data and compare their results to predictions based on theory.

    Required Qualifications*

    Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States at the time they submit their application

    Desired Qualifications*

    Master of Science in Physics or a closely related field required, Ph.D. preferred. Prior experience teaching introductory physics concepts and a record of excellence in college-level teaching, preferably in the United States.

    This position is 100% on-site.

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
