    Job Summary

    The Office of Clinical Affairs is seeking a Manager for Medical Staff Quality. This role reports to the Chief of the Medical Staff who is an elected Michigan Medicine physician.

     

    The Medical Staff Quality (MSQ) Team plays a vital role in advancing Michigan Medicine?s journey to become the safest health system in the world by ensuring a consistent, fair, and accountable approach to provider performance, professionalism, and well-being. Through rigorous case management, collaborative peer review processes, and close coordination with Medical Staff Services (credentialing and privileging), the MSQ Team promotes a culture of safety, trust, and continuous improvement. By upholding high standards for clinical conduct and supporting early intervention when concerns arise, the MSQ Team helps safeguard patients, supports providers, and strengthens institutional integrity, laying the foundation for a highly reliable and transparent health system where safety is embedded in every aspect of care.

     

    This role works in close partnership with the Chief of Staff and the seniormost leadership of the Medical Staff and requires the utmost professionalism, discretion, and highest level of integrity. The Manager will regularly handle sensitive, privileged, and confidential information regarding provider performance and professional standing and closely communicate with the Chief of Staff and the Chief Medical Officer.

     

    The Senior Administrative Manager will have a non-voting or ad hoc seat on several institutional committees, including the Executive Committee on Clinical Affairs (ECCA), the Medical Staff Quality Committee (MSQC), and the Professional Review Advisory Committee (PRAC). The successful candidate will have a record of progressive management experience, professionalism, and exceptional written communication skills to help ensure compliance with the UMH Medical Staff Bylaws, the Joint Commission, CMS, state LARA (Licensing and Regulatory Authority), and NPDB (National Practitioner Data Bank) requirements. The successful candidate will be skilled at leading and inspiring a small team while also being efficient and productive in independent work.

    Responsibilities*

    Key responsibilities for this individual include:

    + Serve as right-hand to Chief of Staff; preparing materials for meetings with key stakeholders related to provider performance, health concerns, and professional conduct; joining, contributing in; and occasionally leading these meetings

    + Manage and oversee three direct reports who comprise the MSQ Team

    + Plan and direct administrative and operational activities related to case management of provider performance (including FPPE and OPPE), health concerns, and professional conduct

    + Communicate with Medical Staff Services colleagues about provider performance, health concerns, and professional conduct related to credentialing and re-credentialing and practitioner performance evaluation; attendance at all pre-credentialing committee meetings and at Credentialing and Privileging Committee meetings when invited

    + Support the three Associate Chiefs of Staffs with their individual portfolios

    + Provide administrative support for and facilitate institutional-level peer review investigations (typically one or two ongoing at a given time) as chaired by the Associate Chief of Staff for Peer Review or the Chief of Staff, typically in consultation with the Office of General Counsel (OGC), to ensure compliance with the Medical Staff Bylaws, including Fair Hearing proceedings.

    + Perform triage of questions from our 20 clinical Department Chairs, our 68 Service Chiefs, and other clinical leaders about provider performance, safety-to-practice, and professional conduct; serve as liaison for OCA's consulting psychiatrist and productivity coach

    + Advise on and triage Compliance hotline reports that involve privileged providers

    + Provide oversight for the Professionalism Committee, which is chaired by the Associate Chief of Staff for Medical Staff Quality

    + Own and serve as subject matter expert for several UMH policies including, but not limited to, Professional Practice Evaluation, Disruptive Behavior Policy, and Impairment Policy

    + Create and send weekly CMO Update to CEO, Chief Medical Officer, UMH President, Chief of Staff, Chief Quality Officer, and UMMG President

    + Ad hoc projects and activities as assigned by the COS or CMO

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree required with at least 5 to 7 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in a medical staff office.

    + An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

    + Ability to communicate expectations, to lead by example, and to build cohesive teams.

    + Experience in providing leadership and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

    + Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, as well as advanced organizational skills.

    + Strong record of working effectively with staff in a diverse environment.

    + Must be extremely detail-oriented and able to handle multiple projects, prioritizing workload to maximize efficiency.

    + Ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, and peers.

    + Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.

    + Ability to handle sensitive topics with professionalism and discretion.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Master's Degree desired

    + Health care experience in an academic environment

    + Knowledge of UM Policies, systems, and procedures

    + Thorough understanding of the Medical Staff Bylaws with the ability to interpret and share that knowledge with others.

    + Experience in an educator role, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational needs of professionals

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
