    Duties: The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz invites applications for the Assistant Director, Student Union Operations. The Center for Student Engagement within the Division of Student Affairs at SUNY New Paltz is dedicated to creating an inclusive and vibrant campus community by taking a student-centered approach to foster lifelong learners and leaders. We do this by collaborating with students, campus partners, and the New Paltz community; providing innovative training, programs, and activities that are both educational and entertaining; and by ensuring all our interactions enrich the student experience. The Center for Student Engagement is seeking a collaborative, organized, and student-centered professional to serve as the Assistant Director for Student Union Operations. This full-time professional staff member will play a critical role in managing the day-to-day operations of the Student Union Building and supporting student engagement through space coordination, event planning support, and supervision of staff and student workers. The Assistant Director will also provide leadership for select programming efforts, supervise student leaders and interns, and serve on divisional committees and working groups. This position requires a flexible schedule with evening and weekend responsibilities.

    Duties:

    • Serve in Student Affairs as part of the Center for Student Engagement, which provides services including orientation and transition programs, leadership development and student activities, fraternity and sorority support, student union operations, and civic engagement.

    • Oversee the daily operations of the Student Union Building, including lounges, multipurpose spaces, the game room, lockers, and storage.

    • Conduct regular walkthroughs of the Student Union and coordinate with facilities, custodial services, and other campus partners to maintain safety, cleanliness, and functionality.

    • Serve as the primary contact for student organization and campus partner events held in the Student Union. Manage event consultations, logistics, A/V coordination, and billing processes.

    • Supervise the Student Union Experience Coordinator, Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement Experience (Student Union Support), and student employees (Welcome Desk, Event Support Staff, and Student Union Managers).

    • Develop and deliver training programs for student workers on customer service, building operations, AV use, emergency procedures, and leadership skills.

    • Advise the Student Engagement Board and student interns who plan events and programs hosted by the Center for Student Engagement.

    • Support commuter and off-campus student engagement through outreach and initiatives.

    • Assist in managing the Engage platform and support recognized student organizations with event planning and training.

    • Serve as lead or representative on divisional committees and Student Affairs working groups to support cross-functional initiatives.

    • Participate in department-wide meetings, training, and assessment efforts.

    • Support the Center for Student Engagement’s mission by collaborating with colleagues to provide innovative, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate experiences for all students.

    Qualifications: Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of two years of professional experience in student union operations, event management, or student affairs

    • Demonstrated supervisory experience with students and/or professional staff

    • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

    • Experience in facilities management, event planning, or customer service

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, student-centered environment

    • Availability to work evening and weekend hours

    Preferred:

    • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field

    • Experience with reservation systems (e.g., EMS, 25Live, Ad Astra) and billing practices

    • Familiarity with SUNY policies and student union operations best practices

    • Knowledge of student development theory and leadership training models

    • Experience advising student organizations and coordinating student interns or engagement boards

    • Ability to work within a dynamic environment and a proven competence in managing multiple tasks and competing priorities
