    General Statement of Duties

As a vital member of our team, you will provide exceptional emergency medical care while working closely with firefighters and other emergency personnel in fast-paced, dynamic environments.     Single Role Paramedics function as lead medic on an ambulance and provides field training oversight to other paramedics or EMT’s. This position is responsible for performing skilled advanced life support medical care, including the pre-hospital care, assessment, preparation and transportation of sick and/or injured patients. The Single Role Paramedic (ALS) performs all work consistent with the EMT-Paramedic certification level as specified by established State of Oregon Scope of Practice.

    Salary Range : $25.59 - $34.27 hourly. Earning Potential: $69,195.36 - $92,666.08 annually. Earning potential is based on a regularly scheduled 48 hour average workweek where all hours worked over 40 in a work week are paid at 1.5 X the regular hourly rate. This position is paid on an hourly basis; the hourly pay range is $25.59-34.27. The annual earning potential listed is based on working 48 hours, on average, per workweek over the span of 52 weeks. The position is eligible for overtime opportunities above the regularly scheduled earning potential reported.

     

    The City of Eugene and Springfield determine starting pay within the range based on relevant education and experience as provided by the applicant in their application materials.     Lateral Paramedic Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    High school diploma or equivalent. Associates or two-year degree preferred.

    Experience

    Two years of continuous relevant full-time paramedic training/work experience. One year of the experience required is satisfied by completing a paramedic internship and clinical rotations. The service must be current, full-time, and continuous with no more than a 30 day break in service at the time of application.

    License

    Possession of and ability to obtain and maintain a State of Oregon Paramedic Licensure. Must have an Oregon Paramedic License by December 19, 2025. National Registry Paramedics or a provisional license would not meet this requirement.

     

    Valid Oregon driver’s license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

    Background:

    Must pass a background investigation.

    Must pass a psychological evaluation, physical assessment and drug test.

    Working Conditions

     

    Work is performed in a fire station setting, and inside and outside in medical emergency environments with exposure to all weather conditions. May be exposed to noise, dust, traffic, slippery surfaces, fumes, smoke, flames, chemicals, biohazards, and hostile and combative patients. Employees carry and use a variety of medical emergency equipment, gurney and various EMS apparatus. Physical demands of the work include use of legs, arms, and hands to walk, run, jump, lift, crouch, and kneel, often for extended periods of time without meals and breaks. Senses of sight/hearing/smell/touch are necessary to help determine nature of emergency. At times, work will be both physically and mentally demanding, including emotionally disturbing scenes, including traumatic injuries and people suffering from disease and illness. Required to frequently lift and carry 1 to 75 pounds. Required to occasionally lift and carry 100+ pounds.

    What to Expect from our Selection Process

    Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required.

     

    Candidates must pass a complete pre-employment physical examination prior to receiving a final offer of employment. The examination and drug test will be conducted by the City’s contracted physician and paid for by the hiring department. Candidates who receive a positive drug test will be disqualified.

    Hiring Process Timeline (dates are tentative and subject to change)

    + Application Screening: August 4-7, 2025. Applications will be reviewed to determine which candidates will be invited to the interview process. This includes an evaluation of the supplemental questions included in the application.

    + Interviews: August 25-29, 2025. The interview process may include job-simulation and/or physical ability practical(s), along with an interview designed to elicit an applicant's relevant skills and abilities for the job.

    + Background Investigations: September 12-October 3, 2025

    + Psychological Testing & Physical Exams: October 20-November 4, 2025

    + Must have State of Oregon Paramedic Licensure by December 19, 2025

    + Hire Date: January 12, 2026

    Bilingual Pay Benefit: Per the IAFF Contract (https://www.eugene-or.gov/Archive.aspx?AMID=72) , the City shall pay an employee equal to 5% of the base rate on base hours excluding overtime. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must have demonstrated fluency in the required language and successfully pass a fluency examination administered by the City's Employee Resource Center division.
