    The Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) within the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC) at the University at Albany is seeking a Professional Graduate Academic Advisor to support the Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) and related graduate programs. This position plays a central role in guiding students through academic planning, course selection, career development, and program engagement. The advisor will work closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure a supportive and enriching educational experience, helping students navigate interdisciplinary opportunities and challenges in the information science field. An integrative and student-centered approach is essential, as the role supports a diverse student body across multiple academic pathways, including dual-degree and certificate options.

     

    The successful candidate will join a department deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with particular emphasis on increasing representation in fields traditionally lacking minority and women's participation. In addition to advising responsibilities, the candidate will contribute to the broader academic community by participating in departmental and college-wide meetings, retreats, committees, and events such as graduation. Reporting to the IST Department Chair, the advisor is expected to engage critically with the evolving intersections of information, technology, and society while supporting students' academic and professional journeys.     Primary Responsibilities:

    + Provide individualized academic advising and student support for graduate students in the MSIS program, including course planning, degree progression, and referrals to university support services to address academic challenges.

    + Collaborate with faculty to stay informed about program requirements, curriculum changes, and emerging trends in the field, ensuring student advising aligns with academic and professional expectations.

    + Support students in identifying and pursuing experiential learning opportunities and career development resources that complement their academic and professional goals.

    + Participate in recruitment, outreach, and orientation activities to promote the MSIS program, engage prospective students, and support retention efforts.

    + Maintain accurate advising documentation, contribute to departmental reporting, and ensure advising practices comply with institutional policies and accreditation standards.

    + Other reasonable duties as assigned.

     

    Core Obligation: This position follows a Tuesday-Saturday obligation, with core obligation hours covering 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This is designed to support the availability and needs of online graduate students who often seek advising outside of traditional business hours.

    + May supervise employees as assigned (if no direct reports at time of filling position)

    Job Requirements:

    + Academic Advising Expertise: Knowledge of advising principles, graduate education processes, and student development theory, with the ability to support diverse learners in academic planning and progression.

    + Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build rapport and effectively engage with students, faculty, and staff.

    + Organizational and Administrative Skills: Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced academic setting.

    + Collaboration and Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and use sound judgment when addressing student needs or challenges.

    + Technological Proficiency: Competence in using student information systems, advising tools, and office software to support student tracking, communication, and reporting.

    + Shows ability to work collaboratively with faculty and mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds.

    + Comprehensive knowledge of AI-driven advising tools, data analytics in student support, and digital literacy initiatives.

    + Proven ability to develop and implement strategies that enhance student retention, engagement, and career readiness.

    + Exhibits commitment to student-centered advisement, inclusivity, and interdisciplinary collaboration

    Job Requirements:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + BS or BA degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

    + A minimum of 2 years of experience in academic advising, college counseling, or student services in a higher education setting.

    + Experience with in-person and fully online programs

    + Experience with the diverse needs of traditional and non-traditional students, such as 1st generation, underrepresented, low-income, remote, international and working students.

    + Experience utilizing academic advising platforms to track student progress, schedule meetings, and provide personalized support.

    + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community

    + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + One or more years of experience in information science or related field

    + MA, MS or Doctoral degree field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

    + Demonstrated experience working within a university setting.

    + Established capacity to work across disciplines to support students in various academic and professional pathways.

    + Active participation in one or more professional organizations relevant to the area of expertise

    Additional Information:

    Professional Rank and Salary Grade: SL-3, Academic Advisor, $60,000
