    Position Summary

    The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for a Library Assistant - Bookmobile to support the library’s Mobile Services Team. This position will staff the library Bookmobile alongside the Mobile Services Librarian, conduct lobby stops at senior living facilities, and work library outreach events. They will support patrons and perform preparatory tasks in and out of the library. The ideal candidate will deliver knowledge with a smile and a spark of wonder to connect communities to books, resources, and imagination, one stop at a time.

    Work Week:

    Tuesday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:30pm

    Saturday, 8:15am -5:15pm

    Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

     

    + Drives Bookmobile and library vehicles, assists the Bookmobile Librarian with pre-trip inspections, selecting and stocking materials for the Bookmobile and library vehicles, opening, closing, securing, and maintaining the Bookmobile and library vehicles as needed;

    + Assists the Bookmobile Librarian in preparing and evaluating programs for the Bookmobile/community;

    + Explains library rules, circulation policies, and procedures to patrons;

    + Provides assistance to patrons in locating various materials throughout the library, including interviewing patrons to determine individual needs, referring patrons to other community resources and libraries, demonstrating the use of the automated card catalog, self-check, electronic resources, and Internet services;

    + Provides instruction to patrons in the use of all technology resources including the library computer catalog, Internet resources, public computers and printers, computer games, microfilm/microfiche reader and printer, and copy machines, scanners, fax machines, projectors, sound system, and other services;

    + Creates motivational and instructional programs to increase awareness and knowledge for children and adults, including planning and presenting story hours and programs for children, preparing booklets, bibliographies, and summer reading materials; presenting classes on how to research using the World Wide Web or other library resources; coordinating displays, forms, and other printed materials with other community agencies or employees within the library;

    + Collects fees for lost or damaged items and printing services.

    + Provides recommendations for library’s webpage and newsletter and participates in overall publicity efforts on behalf of the library.

    + Monitors the sorting and shelving of books in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System as appropriate, including straightening and shifting books as needed, determining collection needs, and selecting materials for purchase within a specific department by evaluating donations received, consulting various review sources and other selection tools;

    + If assigned to the interlibrary loan program, requests materials from other libraries, including borrowing materials using online databases, choosing lending library and knowing lending library policies to inform patrons; and prepares interlibrary loan materials for lending to other libraries and makes appropriate changes to the online circulation system.

    + Compiles key statistics for monthly and annual reports to governing bodies.

    + Attends staff meetings regularly and contributes ideas and comments for promoting the library in general and specifically Public Services, Adult Programming & Outreach, and Youth Services, including implementing marketing plans;

    + Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain works tasks to employees and volunteers.

    + Trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of volunteer personnel to insure proper material placement and appearance;

    + Oversees operation of the bookmobile as requested on designated shifts in the absence of the assigned supervisor;

    + Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;

    + Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;

    + Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;

    + Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;

    + Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;

    + Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

     

    Minimum Required Qualifications

     

    + Bachelor’s Degree; and

    + Some (1-3 years) library and customer service experience; or

    + Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    + Substantial knowledge of library functions, rules, policies, and procedures;

    + Substantial knowledge of specific Department materials and resources;

    + Substantial knowledge of library catalogs, indexes, reference materials, circulating and non-circulating collections, email, social networking tools, and audio-visual equipment;

    + Substantial knowledge of OCLC WorldCat and FirstSearch;

    + Substantial knowledge of print and electronic reference resources;

    + Substantial knowledge of local community resources, research, and other reference materials;

    + Substantial knowledge of the Internet and other electronic sources;

    + Substantial knowledge of general issues and current events;

    + Substantial knowledge of basic math;

    + Substantial knowledge of child development and behavior;

    + Ability to effectively market Bookmobile and library services;

    + Ability to work independently with special emphasis on decision making while alone;

    + Ability and desire to work with, build, and maintain effective relationships with people of all ages and background in the community/public;

    + Ability to use library equipment employed in all phases or functions of assigned duties, including basic computer operation, microfilm, microfiche, copy machine, and cash register;

    + Ability to work independently and provide assistance to patrons;

    + Ability to troubleshoot minor computer problems and other equipment malfunctions;

    + Ability to perform complicated searches on the automated catalog, Internet, and related sources;

    + Ability to sort, file, and retrieve information according to the Dewey Decimal System;

    + Ability to effectively present library programs including perform readings and storytelling;

    + Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;

    + Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;

    + Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;

    + Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;

    + Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

    + Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

    + Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

    + Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;

    Required Special Qualifications

     

    + Bilingual proficiency is preferred;

    + Bookmobile experience including public outreach/community participation is desired, but not required;

    + Must obtain a valid Montana Driver's License within 60 days of employment, and obtain a Class B Montana Commercial Driver’s License within six months of employment;
