Job Description
Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsiblities
Enhanced Capabilities for Subcritical Experiments is seeking an outstanding Pulsed Power Engineer to work with a technical team to install, commission, and maintain the Scorpius Pulsed Power Linear Induction Accelerator. This high-current relativistic electron accelerator is driven by nearly 45,000 solid state pulsed power stages and is the most advanced accelerator the U.S. has ever developed. The ideal candidate will work within a collaboration between the Nevada National Security Site, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Livermore National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratory to prepare the accelerator for state-of-the-art experiments and to solve challenging problems that will improve pulsed power and accelerator performance.
Key Responsibilities
+ Work alongside scientists and engineers to install, trouble-shoot, and test cutting-edge electrical and pulse-power technologies in North Las Vegas and the Nevada National Security Site.
+ Work alongside scientist and engineers to develop circuit models capable of accurately modeling start-of-the-art accelerator systems.
+ Assist in the development of subscripts in various program languages to aid analysis and/or manipulate data.
+ Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure appropriate predictive capabilities and measurement techniques exists for the development of high-fidelity computer models.
+ Remain aware of advancements in Pulsed Power Engineering theory, techniques, and capabilities.
+ Document results in institutional reports and peer-reviewed journals; present results at institutional meetings, project/program meetings, internal/external workshops, and various conferences.
+ Prepares or contributes to designs, strategies, reports and technical proposals.
+ Frequent coordination of pulsed-power information with other departments within the company and with outside vendors. Works with outside contacts as required to obtain relevant information.
+ Contribute to and participate in planning and reporting activities.
+ Follows established electrical and pulsed power engineering and technical procedures and instructions.
+ Coordinates work within electrical and/or pulsed power on entry-level projects.
+ Often serves as a member of work teams.
+ Defines specifications for procurements and initiates purchase requests.
+ Perform other duties assigned by Management.
+ Able and willing to travel as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements:
+ Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees
+ or calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering.
+ or Professional Engineer license
_Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge._
+ Ability to interpret circuit schemes and standards relevant to electrical engineering and pulse-power technologies.
+ Interpersonal skills in both verbal and written communications and the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and staff.
+ Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and procedures.
+ Be well organized, maintain safe work habits.
+ Willingness for mentorship with senior and principal engineers.
+ Work Location: The primary work location will be at the North Las Vegas NNSS campus and/or at Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).
+ Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).
+ Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
+ Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Desired Skills:
+ Knowledge of the fundamentals of pulsed-power technology.
+ Basic knowledge of linear induction accelerators.
+ Some hands-on experience with high-voltage systems.
+ Proficient in using diagnostics such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, voltage and current probes
+ Knowledge in any of the following is desired:
+ Basic electromagnetic theory
+ Transmission line theory
+ Basic electronics principles
+ Programming in Python
+ Statistical analysis techniques
+ Writing technical reports
+ Design and troubleshooting analog and digital circuits
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. **Department of Energy Q Clearance** (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 (http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=14b1c770db022992d237769fbe9fc519&mc=true&node=se10.4.707\_14&rgn=div8) , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Annual salary range for this position is: $66,248.00 - $99,382.40.
Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
