Course Description

The Bible is often imagined as an eternal and unchanging book. However, the late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed the (re)discovery of dozens of lost works that revolutionized the modern understanding of how the Bible came into being, what was included in ancient Bibles, and what Judaism(s) and Christianit(ies) looked like in the early centuries of the Common Era. This course follows the dusty adventures of the modern players who discovered these lost books and uses these swashbuckling tales as a jumping off point to reconstruct the lives and thoughts of the ancient scribes and visionaries who composed these works.

Responsibilities*

This is a 25% position that entails 10 hours of effort per week. GSI duties will include, but are not limited to:

+ attending two class lectures per week

+ holding regular office hours weekly and being available over email for questions or concerns

+ assisting in general course preparation

+ grading all assignments in a timely manner and keeping accurate records

+ attending regular meetings with course instructor

+ assisting in final grading and assessment at the end of the term.

Required Qualifications*

Prior coursework and/or familiarity with Judaic Studies. Currently enrolled graduate student in good standing at the University of Michigan.

Desired Qualifications*

+ Prior GSI experience in the College of LSA

+ Overall positive academic performance and progress towards degree

+ Relevant graduate training

+ Ability to work with a diverse student body

+ Preference will be given to graduate students within the College of LSA

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Decision Making Process

All applications will be submitted for review to the faculty member teaching the course. After review of applications and possible interviews, decisions will be made by the faculty member teaching the course. Preference will be given to applicants enrolled in LSA graduate programs. This is the first time hiring for this position, but similar positions in Judaic Studies typically receive around ten applications.

Selection Process

The Faculty member will make the selection based on the desired qualifications listed. All GSI appointments are subject to administrative approval. Estimated date for an offer to be extended: July 31, 2025 or sooner. Applicants may request the status of their application from the program at any time.
