    Precourt Institute for Energy

     

    As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the University on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the University develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We work across campus in all seven of Stanford’s schools. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people.

    Seeking Managing Director, Stanford Sustainable Mobility Center** **:

    Seeking exceptional candidates to serve as the Managing Director of the Stanford Sustainable Mobility Center (SMC), a high-impact new research center within the Precourt Institute aimed at enabling a future where mobility is green, safe, accessible, equitable, and affordable thanks to breakthrough innovations in multiple technological domains.

     

    Working in conjunction with the Stanford Sustainable Mobility Center faculty Co-Directors and reporting directly to the Precourt Institute Director, the Managing Director will lead the development, management, and execution of the Stanford Sustainable Mobility Center. The Managing Director will create and direct innovative programs and projects that leverage the broad and deep expertise of Stanford faculty and students and create long-term value and transformative impact for the global mobility ecosystem. The position requires a significant amount of self-direction and initiative to further build and strengthen SMC within Stanford and externally with existing and new members worldwide.

    The Stanford Sustainable Mobility Center** **:

    The Stanford Sustainable Mobility Center (SMC) is a new holistic and integrated center that brings together faculty and researchers from all across the Stanford community to work hand-in-hand with key stakeholders from across the global mobility ecosystem. The mission of the Stanford Sustainable Mobility Center is to conduct research and analysis on sustainable mobility across five main research pillars: sustainable energy systems, sustainable infrastructure, safety, economic viability, and sustainable design. By integrating the principles of equity, decarbonization, safety, and resilience, SMC’s aim is to envision a future of sustainable mobility characterized by improved accessibility, enhanced energy efficiency, and economic development leading to more livable and sustainable communities.

     

    SMC is being formed by merging two existing programs: the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford and the EV50 initiative, and thus will build upon an already thriving community of faculty, students, and industrial affiliates. In addition to 1-2 autonomous vehicle platforms, it is envisioned that the SMC will install at the Automotive Innovation Facility a number of additional experimental facilities including a testbed for sustainable aircraft design including eVTOL, fixed based driving simulator, a testbed for new batteries, a dynamic wireless charging track, and charging/fueling stations to study reliable 24x7 sustainable charging infrastructures.

     

    SMC will work closely with the mobility ecosystem and implement significant integrated innovation across three core areas: Research, Education, and Honest-Broker Convening.

    Your Responsibilities will include** **:

    + Based on engagements with the global mobility ecosystem and deep understanding of their mid-to-long term challenges and opportunities, lead an effort to create a well-defined research, educational and convening programs at Stanford to help address them.

    + Lead the effort to help translate Stanford activities into real-world impact for the global mobility ecosystem.

    + Lead strategic planning and analysis for complex university functions or programs with significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise. Manage and direct the development, implementation, administration and evaluation of functions or programs. Monitor trends and recommend program direction.

    + Act as the subject matter expert for School/unit and/or the university regarding the interpretation, implementation and compliance with policies and regulations. Recommend actions and/or resolve complex issues that span organizational boundaries.

    + Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external constituencies.

    + Direct and manage outreach strategy that may include relationship development, communications, and compliance.

    + Oversee or supervise staff in the development and implementation of functions or programs.

    To be successful in this position, you will need** **:

    + Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

    + Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span multiple organizational boundaries.

    + Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.

    + Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.

    + Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.

    + Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.

    + Relevant subject matter expertise.

    + Strong project planning and management skills.

    + Experience in or knowledge of business process improvement methodology.

    + Ability to act independently and as part of a team.

    In addition, our preferred qualifications include** **:

    + PhD degree

    + Significant and Diverse Experience and Expertise in the Mobility Sector: Significant experience, knowledge, and network in multiple facets of mobility systems, ideally including intelligent transportation systems, infrastructure systems, environmental impacts, regulation, economics, and policy implications. Strong candidates will have experience with and understanding of emerging trends in mobility systems and a thoughtful view on how these systems might optimally evolve going into the future. Strong candidates will be expected to have > 5 years of experience in these areas.

    + Significant Data Science/Advanced Computational Modeling/Machine Learning/Big Data Analytics Experience and Expertise: Significant (or at least some) experience, knowledge, and network in the areas of cutting-edge data science, advanced computational modeling, machine learning, and/or big data analytics. Experience in handling data privacy, stewardship, and protection issues is also strongly desired. Strong candidates will be expected to have > 5 years of experience in these relevant areas.

    + Strong Organizational and Management Experience and Skills: Significant experience and track record of success in leading and managing complex, multi-disciplinary organizations and teams is desired, along with excellent communication skills.

    The expected pay range for this position is $181,914.00 to $231,158.00 per annum.
