Job Summary
The Basic Needs Center is seeking an Outreach and Communications Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Basic Needs Center ( BNC ) at Oregon State University ( OSU ) is a lively community center where students help students navigate financial challenges and build community. It is designed to be a welcoming, solutions-focused environment where students can get real support and make a plan to move forward. Focused on housing, food, and living on a budget, the BNC offers peer-led strategy conversations, skill-building workshops (such as cooking and apartment hunting), leadership activities, and social events. Students can also participate in volunteer activities and use the center as a space to study, relax, or connect with others. While direct aid (food from the OSU Food Pantry) is a key element of the organization , the BNC’s core mission is to empower students with tools, knowledge, and support networks to meet their needs and thrive during their college experience.
As a workplace, the BNC values relationships and trust, fostering leadership and capacity-building in all team members. Everyone is both a learner and a teacher, provided high support and held to high expectations.
The Outreach Programs Coordinator ( OPC ) plays a key role at the BNC through student staff supervision, program coordination, and outreach strategy development. The role fosters an inclusive and relationship-rich environment for student leaders, guiding their growth through coaching, mentorship, project management, and ongoing evaluation. It involves co-supervising student employees in collaboration with other professional staff and supporting real-time peer-to-peer interactions and student-led outreach efforts—all aimed at building both community and self-efficacy within and among students who are navigating tough economic situations.
The OPC also coordinates student-centered and student-led outreach, education, and leadership development efforts that expand the reach and impact of the BNC . The role collaborates with the BNC Director and BNC student staff to implement comprehensive outreach and education programs in collaboration with internal and external partners. The position leads training efforts on event planning, communications, and leadership development. The role includes administrative responsibilities such as managing most communications, especially student-facing outreach such as the BNC’s digital presence, promotional materials, and volunteer recruitment.
