    Job Description:

    This is a Part Time Integrated Medical and Behavioral Health Social Worker at Primary Children's Center for Safe and Healthy Families provides medical and behavioral health services to victims of child abuse and their families. In order to support families seeking either medical or behavioral health services related to abuse and trauma, the Medical Social Worker works as part of a multidisciplinary team at Safe and Healthy Families and collaborates with patients, patients' family, healthcare providers, Child Protective Services, law enforcement, community human service agencies, insurers, and other involved parties. The Safe and Healthy Families medical team consists of child abuse pediatricians, forensic nurses and medical social workers who respond to the Emergency Department and inpatient units at Primary Children’s hospital to help determine the causes of injuries and illnesses when there are concerns for abuse. The Medical Social Worker at Safe and Healthy Families joins the medical team on inpatient and emergency department patient consults in order to provide support to patients and families, gather psychosocial information to assist in developing a plan of care for the patient, and connect the patient and family to appropriate resources and referrals.

     

    The behavioral health trauma treatment team at Safe and Healthy Families consists of psychologists, clinical social workers and psychiatrists who provide evidence-based trauma treatment to assist children and their families who are experiencing emotional and/or behavioral problems related to trauma. The Medical Social Worker supports the trauma treatment team through conducting phone intakes to determine whether a child might benefit from the therapeutic modalities offered at Safe and Healthy Families and helps to maintain a referral list for our therapy services.

    Job Specifics

    + Pay Range Clinical: $35.25 - $54.39 Non Exempt

    + Pay Range Certified: $32.02-$49.44 Non Exempt

    + Benefits Eligible: Yes

    + FTE: **Part time / 24hrs a week.**

    + Shift: Three 8hr shifts, business hours, Monday - Friday.

    + Location:Primary Children’s Center for Safe and Healthy Families, at both the Eccles Outpatient building in Salt Lake and at the Miller Campus in Lehi

    Essential Functions:

    + Triage incoming phone calls and emails to determine what SHF service(s) are most appropriate and how quickly a child should be seen, including gathering information from family members and/or other referral sources relevant to potential trauma/abuse history.

    + Present key information to SHF medical provider or behavioral health trauma treatment team for medical decision-making and/or other recommendations for treatment.

    + Support patients and families during initial medical evaluations for child physical and sexual abuse (occurring in ED, inpatient, and SHF outpatient clinic settings).

    + Coordinate and collaborate with family, DCFS, law enforcement and SHF medical team to ensure follow-through during child abuse investigation.

    + Provide support, consultation, and team education to Intermountain Health caregivers when concerns of child abuse and neglect arise, including how and when the SHF medical team can provide medical consultation and evaluation of a patient, how to report to DCFS and/or what to consider before reporting, and how to work with ongoing CPS/DCFS case workers for best outcomes.

    + Participate in SHF team debriefings and ongoing education and skill-building to increase team resilience and reduce vulnerability to secondary trauma.

    Skills

    + Specific interest in working with patients with histories of child physical abuse and sexual abuse, and willingness to learn and practice skills to reduce the risk of secondary trauma

    + Knowledge of evidence-based behavioral health services for child abuse and trauma and under what circumstances they are helpful

    + Competency in setting aside personal feelings and judgment to provide empathy and support to parents who may have caused serious harm or death to their child

    + Awareness of implicit bias in healthcare and ability to advocate for patients and families whose lifestyle or actions could be impacted by past exposure to abuse, trauma, and socioeconomic status

    + Understanding of medical terminology related to the various forms of child abuse and neglect

    + Ability to act as “interpreter” to bridge communication between medical professionals and child welfare investigators

    + Understanding of the child welfare system and a family’s journey through the Children’s Justice Center

    + Skilled communication and partnership-building with DCFS, with an understanding of their system structure, practice guidelines, and legal limitations.

    + Attention to detail in both written and verbal communication.

    + Ability to prioritize job duties based on urgency and multitask throughout the day.

    + Know when and how to escalate within the child welfare system when there are concerns for child safety due to inadequate safety planning, new medical findings, or misunderstanding of initial medical findings.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Master's Degree in Social Work. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.

    + Current State Licensure as a CSW, LCSW or CMHC.

    + Computer Skills, i.e., email, word processing.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience working within a healthcare setting

    + Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary medical team

    + Experience working with CPS and/or Utah’s Division of Child & Family Services

    + Experience providing crisis intervention services

    + Experience working directly with children, teens, or families

    + Knowledge of evidence-based treatments for trauma

    + Spanish speaking

    The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
