    Under the direction of the Head of Paintings Conservation, the Collections Care Specialist is responsible for the framing of paintings, preparing them for exhibition and loan in accordance with curatorial and conservation standards.

    Essential Functions:

    • Work closely with paintings and frame conservators for the framing and unframing of paintings, including glazing, backing boards, and frame modifications.

    • Cut plexiglass for framing as needed.

    • Design overframes and create micro-climates for paintings as needed.

    • Coordinate with registrars and conservators to plan and maintain a work schedule based on the exhibition calendar, loan requests from other institutions, and conservation treatment schedules.

    • Assist with gallery and exhibition installations as needed.

    • Consult with MFA staff, owners, or staff of lending institutions to ascertain special requirements regarding framing of particular artworks.

    • Prepare paintings for safe and permanent storage where required.

    • Organize, order, and maintain all materials necessary for framing paintings.

    • Maintain workspace and paintings storage in a clean and orderly manner.

    • Working with collections care, conservation, and registrar staff, be responsible for the safe movement of paintings through the building.

    • Perform data entry as required in collections management database, particularly recording of paintings and frame locations and movement.

    • Participate in cleaning program and perform routine dusting and cleaning of art objects as required.

    • When necessary, travel as courier to supervise the handling, transit, and installation of artworks.

    • Perform other duties as responsibilities necessitate.

    Qualifications:

    • Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in art related field.

    • Candidate must have experience in art museum installations and/or art transport with focus on the movement, handling, and installation of paintings.

    • Some carpentry skills and ability to work with hand tools required.

    • General knowledge of conservation and conservation materials preferred.

    • General computer literacy required.

    • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

    • Must be organized, work well under pressure, and be a team player.

    Salary Range:

    Full-Time Salary, 35 hours per week

     

    Salary: $47,000 - $58,000

     

    This position is affiliated with the United Auto Workers Union.
