JOB SUMMARY
Directs, plans, and evaluates day-to-day functions to ensure that high-quality trauma services are provided at assigned trauma center. Coordinates the activities of the Trauma Services staff. Integrates pre-hospital, Emergency Department, Surgery and inpatient services to ensure the delivery of quality patient care. Works collaboratively with various Medical Directors, and other stakeholders, regarding the planning and implementation of trauma services. Reports to the Director of Emergency and Trauma Services for Raleigh General Hospital.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinates the activities of Trauma Services.
Integrates the Hospital, Emergency Department, Surgery and inpatient services to set service quality standards and to ensure the delivery of quality patient care.
Supervises, plans, and evaluates day to day functions of Trauma Services in accordance with Trauma Center designation/verification.
Participates in the preparation of the Trauma Department operating and capital budget and monitors operational costs within budgetary goals.
Participates in the development of the strategic plan and departmental goals for Trauma Services.
Participates on committees, task forces and groups as needed.
Works with other trauma programs to ensure process alignment for transferring patients.
Works closely with Marketing and outside agencies as appropriate to provide community trauma outreach.
Organizes and coordinates activities to meet Trauma designation/verification.
Works collaboratively with other services and Medical Directors regarding the planning and implementation of Trauma Services.
Compiles and organizes all necessary documents for review by ACS Trauma surveyors.
Works with Medical Director and Director of Emergency and Trauma Services to ensure all necessary quality and committee activities are in place as required for Trauma designation/verification. Serves as primary contact or designee with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma for all designation/verification achievement activities.
Works in a customer service oriented manner with physicians and nursing/clinical staff to concurrently ensure that patients are receiving evidence based care according to abstraction guidelines.
Works with the Director of Emergency and Trauma Services and Registrars on Trauma core measure projects to maximize efficiency and productivity.
Completes outcome report card(s) while tracking and trending measurable improvements in core measures.
Performs Quality Review of core measure or other clinical records as directed by internal or external sources.
Reviews and resolves listings of errors and/or inconsistencies identified by data validation checks.
Participates in the Quality Control review of core measure data prior to data release.
Develops and maintains processes for data validation and integrity for selected projects.
Utilizes computer hardware and software including desktop applications, project management tools, and other data management software for data retrieval, data collection, error detection, analysis, and reporting.
Acts as a point of contact for core measure data management activities with the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services (WVOEMS).
Benchmarks with other hospitals to identify best practices and processes for core measures, and coordinates selected external benchmarking projects with the State, and others when indicated.
In collaboration with the Director of Emergency and Trauma Services, gives feedback to physicians and other clinical staff on failed core measure cases to ensure future compliance with core measures.
Develops and assists in developing clinical report cards.
Responds to specific data requests from physicians, administration, and staff for assigned core measures and for other topics as needed.
Coordinates record reviews for data validation by the ACS, state and governmental agencies for core measures.
Handles data quality reviews which may involve interpretation and decision making as to appropriate course of action.
Effectively interacts and communicates with colleagues and customers.
Prepares, submit, and reports selected hospital publicly reported data elements.
Oversees accuracy of Trauma Services and Trauma Surgeon report cards.
Ensures confidentiality of Trauma Registry files.
Analyzes trauma registry data for TQIP, state requirements, and ongoing performance/quality improvement.
Assists Trauma Registrar in the submission of data request by state, local, and Federal agencies.
Maintains integrity of data for assigned core measures, overseeing data collection process ensuring data integrity, analysis, and reporting.
Runs reports routinely and as requested by the Trauma Committee.
Communicates outcome data timely and effectively to clinical staff, management, and physicians to improve quality.
Documents improvements in quality of care for Core Measures through usage of the V5 Trauma Registry Database.
Continually updates clinical staff, physicians and management on new guidelines and data dictionaries, and coordinates data collection processes and people to assure tight deadlines are met.
Interacts with hospital teams as a liaison for Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety purposes.
Assists physicians, staff, and administration in identifying failed core measures and selecting/implementing best practice guidelines.
Works with the Director of Emergency and Trauma Services and Trauma Registrars to coordinate with clinical teams and IS for the building, testing, data validation, and maintenance of clinical databases, when appropriate.
Assists Director of Emergency and Trauma Services and Trauma Registrars in data cleaning and correction to ensure databases are well-validated and ready for transfer and/or statistical analysis.
Actively participates in the development of clinical databases for internal/external data analysis.
In collaboration with Director of Emergency and Trauma Services and Trauma Medical Director, develops key clinical indicators for routine monitoring of performance and quality improvement
Develops key clinical indicators for routine monitoring of performance statistics for internal use and communicates performance internally.
Serves on various PI projects or teams to improve outcomes and quality of trauma patient care.
Utilizes clinical data to develop and support best practice guidelines.
Collaborates with Information Systems and other department to develop and improve databases for clinical data analysis.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department:

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program.
BSN or MSN preferred
Required Skills
• Requires clinical knowledge and understanding of medical terminology and a thorough understanding of Trauma Services.
• Demonstrates proficiency in computer skills (data entry, spread sheets and presentation software).
• Requires skills necessary to effectively plan, develop, coordinate and evaluate Trauma Services.
• Requires a strong understanding of the regulatory environment.
• Requires strong analytical, problem solving, planning, organizing and decision making skills.
• Requires interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to work with hospital-wide departments and Medical Staff and to make public presentations regarding Trauma Services.
National Trauma Certification (TCRN) preferred.
BLS required
TNCC required
Required Licenses
[West Virginia, United States] Registered Nurse
Current WV or compact RN license required.
Minimum Work Experience
Two to five years of job-related experience in Trauma Services required; leadership experience is preferred.
