    We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as Assistant Director of Bands one year appointment non-tenure track position.

     

    The School of Music at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a full-time Assistant Director of Bands at the position of Lecturer I (non-tenure track) to join a collaborative team of faculty, staff, and students within our School of Music and band program to start Fall 2025. This is a nine-month position during the academic year.

     

    In their role as Assistant Director of Bands, the successful candidate will be responsible for helping direct the Vaquero Marching Band and administrating all UTRGV Athletic Bands, including the volleyball and basketball pep bands, while maintaining close collaboration with UTRGV Athletics. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Director of Athletic Bands, and the School of Music. The successful candidate will be responsible for collaborating with the Director of Bands in administrating, conducting, and recruiting for the Symphonic Winds on the Brownsville campus (during the fall semesters) and teaching additional courses based on the candidate’s strengths and department needs. The successful candidate will also be expected to recruit undergraduate and graduate students and cultivate positive relationships with faculty, university administration, and band alumni in service to a develop a collaborative environment.

     

    The successful candidate will engage in conducting appearances, conference presentations, intramural and extramural competitions, and national recognition through awards. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentoring of students in outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will be strong recruiters capable of broadening participation among members of under-represented groups; teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; will integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and will provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. UTRGV is a distributed institution.

     

    As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including but not exclusive to UTRGV campuses in Brownsville and Edinburg.

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : · Serve as Assistant Director of Bands.

     

    • Work with the marching band in collaboration with the Director of Athletic Bands. Lead the Pep Band at Volleyball, Soccer and Basketball games. Assist in planning and instruction of movement and music rehearsals, guiding students through proficient use of the Ultimate Drill Book or comparable technology.

    • Direct the Symphonic Winds on the Brownsville campus (Fall Semester).

    • Direct and support a robust student leadership cohort in the organization of student data, alumni engagement, equipment and logistics coordination, and fundraising, by meeting regularly with student leaders across the instructional and organizational arms of the Athletic Band Program.

    • Provide administrative leadership to the Athletic Band Program by delegating administrative tasks over an 11-month calendar focused on student recruiting, hiring of instructional support staff, creative show development, selecting musical repertoire, coordinating early housing arrival, and developing performance schedules.

    • Assists the Director of Athletic Bands with UTRGV Athletics, Marketing, and Operations to coordinate game-day logistics, stadium access, and event planning as it relates to alumni and prospective student programs. Develop and engage in systematic recruitment activities that include but are not limited to off-campus high school visits, on-campus clinics, and workshops for area high school directors and students and conducting at honors and all-state festivals. Regularly participate in audition placements for concert ensembles. Work directly with university offices (Centers for Students with Disabilities, Community Standards, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Dean of Students) to advance initiatives around diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

     

    Department/College Background: The UTRGV School of Music is located on the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses and prepares students to succeed as teachers, performers, and scholars by studying diverse musical styles, genres, and traditions; conducting research; and collaborating with each other as well as with local, national, and global communities. Through extensive community engagement, service learning, and exceptional performance opportunities, we expand the understanding of music and enrich the cultural life in our local society and beyond. The School of Music has over 400 students and over 50 faculty members. Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Music with Teacher Certification, a Bachelor of Music in Performance, and Master’s Degrees in Music Education, Performance, Ethnomusicology, and Conducting.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Earned master’s degree in a relevant field of Music by the August 1, 2025.

     

    Working with collegiate marching and athletic bands.

     

    Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

     

    Experience with directing and supporting student leaders across the instructional and organizational arms of an Athletic Band Program.

     

    Familiarity with Drill Writing and Music Writing software.

     

    Demonstrated success in wind band conducting.

     

    Preferred Qualification

     

    Doctorate of Musical Arts Preferred from an accredited university.

     

    Experience teaching Concert and Athletic bands at the secondary level.

     

    Marching Band Show Design Experience

    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
