As the Director of Health & Safety, you will be responsible for leading, motivating, and fostering a culture of health and safety excellence within our North American Fiber Procurement organization. In this capacity, you will collaborate with leaders and colleagues at all levels of the business to address safety risks, prevent incidents, ensure regulatory compliance, and encourage responsible safety practices in daily operations. This critical position reports directly to the Senior Vice President, Forestry & Recycled Fiber with dotted line reporting to the Corporate Vice President, Health & Safety. Two safety managers support the business and will report to the Director of Health & Safety, Fiber Procurement.

What we do:
The North American Fiber Procurement team at Smurfit Westrock is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Our operations include a network of facilities dedicated to providing our paper mills with a dependable, high-quality, and sustainable supply of virgin wood fiber and recycled paper. The wood fiber procurement segment of our business encompasses 6 chip mills, 9 roundwood storage yards, 12 regional forest resources offices, and a team of more than 250 procurement foresters, woodyard operators, and regional support staff located in the field throughout the United States and Canada.
Our recycling system is comprised of 25 recycle plants across the United States, where we receive, sort, and bale paper and other recyclable materials. Our recycled fiber procurement teams are located at 12 of our recycled paper mills, and our centralized support function is located at the Atlanta, Georgia headquarters. Our recycling business operates a fleet of trucks to transport paper and other recyclable materials between customers and our recycling centers. A key aspect of this role is collaborating with the business to ensure that the fleet adheres to applicable transportation safety regulations. The combined recycled fiber segment includes more than 500 fiber buyers, recycle plant operators, truck drivers, plant office staff, and corporate support team members.
How You Will Impact Smurfit Westrock:
* Collaborate with and advise business and site leaders to create a proactive safety culture aimed at achieving zero serious injuries and fatalities and industry leading safety performance
* Providing hands-on assistance in implementing the company\u2019s Safety Excellence management system, which includes, but is not limited to powered industrial trucks/mobile equipment, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), machine guarding, working from heights, ergonomics, material handling/dock safety, electrical safety, contractor safety, walking/working surfaces, confined spaces, hot work, line and equipment opening (LEO), and hazardous communication
* Work with sites to implement Smurfit Westrock\u2019s Safety for Life program, which is focused on six high-risk areas to reduce serious injuries and fatalities
* Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents to identify and create targeted initiatives to prevent safety incidents in the business
* Develop programs and processes to ensure site-level compliance with applicable safety regulations
* Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements for the owner/operator, including helping sites with issues relating to driver qualifications, hours-of-service limits, drug testing requirements and regulatory audits
* Prepare weekly, monthly and other reports on the business\u2019 safety performance for leaders; identify and effectively communicate best practices across the business
* Participate in corporate safety audits as requested and work with site leadership to ensure prompt site closure of findings from corporate safety audits
* Conduct or help sites conduct thorough investigations in response to safety incidents, including using human and organizational performance approaches
* Assist sites in responding to enforcement matters that may be initiated by OSHA, DOT, FMSCA or other relevant regulatory agencies, working in conjunction with the Company\u2019s legal advisors as appropriate
* Develop comprehensive training plans for safety awareness, regulatory compliance, and other relevant topics
What You Need to Succeed:
* Bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene or equivalent with CSP, CSHM or CIH
* Minimum of ten (10) years of experience managing multi-site health and safety programs in an industrial setting; prior experience with transportation/fleet safety
* Extensive knowledge of safety standards, methodologies, and regulations, including the requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
* Ability to travel to regional facilities with travel up to 50% of the time with periods of higher travel required to meet situational initiatives or events
* Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally and to engage colleagues to promote safety policies and standards
* Strong organizational skills, prioritization abilities, and capacity to manage multiple tasks concurrently
* Proven track record of critical thinking and problem-solving
* Ability to exercise sound professional judgment in making quick decisions under stressful and time-sensitive conditions
