    Purpose and Scope

    OVERVIEW

    Memphis-Shelby County Schools is seeking dynamic educational champions ready to position our district as a national exemplar of education transformation.     SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

    The Dean of Students works with the Principal in carrying out the school's academic and behavior programs. As a professional educator, the Dean of Students understands and responds to the challenges presented by today's diverse student population. The Dean of Students provides proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students' academic achievement, personal and social development. The Dean of Students works cooperatively with the principal, counselor, nurse, staff, students and parents towards a positive school climate. We seek an individual who has successful experience in serving urban families with varying levels of education, socioeconomics, and parental engagement. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and parental engagement with a goal of increasing academic performance and college readiness.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Serves as a resource for staff, administrators, and parents in working with students, creating a positive school climate, and helping students develop a positive self-concept.

    2. Attends and participates in various leadership team meetings and other in-school meetings as assigned. Must possess the ability to interpret attendance data accurately.

    3. Coordinates implementation of parent involvement as well as school sponsored events. Assists with school-wide and event supervision. May oversee school-wide emergency preparedness team meetings and implementation

    4. Coordinates, facilitates and implements attendance intervention steps, including but not limited to holding attendance conferences, making home visits, and preparing School Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting paperwork. Contacts students and parents to discuss attendance irregularities.

    5. Works closely with the principal and discipline committee to develop effective discipline policies, strategies, programs, and incentives to improve discipline.

    6. Works with the Assistant Principal to plan and coordinate work of assigned staff members.

    7. Assists in developing and implementation practices dealing with campus control and security.

    8. Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints from teachers, students and parents; works to resolve administrative, instructional and behavioral problems.

    9. Investigates, adjudicates, and monitors minor and major infractions of the school code in the form of progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, suspensions, or expulsions.

    10. Works with community and government agencies on problems relating to security, drug abuse and truancy

    11. Facilitate school-wide Response to Intervention (RTI) program.

    12. Provides instructional Leadership for teachers. Serves as a member of the ILT team and provides Instructional support for teachers in the identified content area. Conduct formal and informal observations. Conduct Professional development.

    13. Supervises assigned professional, para-professional, administrative and support staff members, including establishing staffing standards, organizing, selecting or recommending selection, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, disciplining, and terminating or recommending termination; prepares periodic employee performance evaluations.

    14. Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints from teachers, students and parents; works to resolve administrative, instructional and behavioral problems.

    15. Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Requires a master’s degree in educational administration or supervision from an accredited college or university. State certification in Administration/Supervision at the elementary and/or secondary level, Educational Leadership, or an equivalent certification as defined by the Tennessee Department of Education. Requires 3 to 5 years of successful teaching experience with some demonstrated leadership experience. An equivalent combination of training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered (Examples: Adult Higher Education, MBA, Organizational Management, and Public Administrations).

     

    Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

     

    Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.

    Additional Job Details

    This position is only funded for the 2025-26 SY.
