    We are looking for an easygoing and dependable person to join our small team to do this very important work. Knowledge of autoCAD Civil 3D is a must as it is used daily. The position offers a flex schedule and opportunities to work remotely. Another good thing to note is that the position is approximately 30% field and 70% office. Time in the office is spent reviewing subdivision plats, annexation and zoning maps, legal descriptions, etc. and preparing legal descriptions and exhibits. Time in the field is spent monitoring survey control on the various ponds within the city, topographic surveys for Traffic and other tasks as needed.     Under general direction, operates as a one-person surveyor and sometimes leads a surveying crew in conducting field surveys, in addition to providing professional level maps, plats and exhibit drawings, and assists with electronic and manual review of maps, plats, development projects, legal descriptions, and related documents for their compliance with city and state requirements.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Researches, calculates and writes legal descriptions for such purposes as rights-of-way, legal boundaries, annexations, and easements; prepares maps, plats, and exhibit drawings.

     

    Performs ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, topographic design surveys, and boundary and other land surveys. Prepares and assures completeness of field notes.

     

    Measures and records angles, distances, elevations, and locations through the use of standard and computerized surveying equipment. Sets survey monuments; stakes out construction plans. Performs land surveys using GPS equipment.

     

    Gathers field information and assists in maintaining the city's Geographic Information System (GIS).

     

    Prepares maps, plats, and exhibit drawings using survey software and computer aided drafting software. Uses survey and computer aided design (CAD) software with electronically collected data or field note data to produce useful, graphical information.

     

    Conducts research in county records.

     

    Archives maps, drawings, and records.

     

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Experience:

    High school diploma or GED; four years or more of progressive land surveying experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

    Licensing/Certification Requirements:

    A Land Surveyor Intern (LSI) licensure issued by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors is required.

    A Professional Land Surveyor license (PLS) in the State of Colorado preferred.

     

    Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.

     

    Knowledge of content of the manual of Instructions for the Survey of the Public Lands of the U.S. (2009).

     

    Knowledge of the purpose and required content of legal descriptions, rights-of-way and related plans.

     

    Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

     

    Knowledge of standards and elements of surveying and of a surveying program.

     

    Knowledge of the use of survey and computer aided design (CAD) software.

     

    Knowledge of the methods and techniques of report preparation and record keeping.

     

    Skill in organizing and recording precise, detailed data.

     

    Skill in performing accurate mathematical calculations.

     

    Skill in the use of a personal computer and job-related applications, such as CAD software, survey software, word processing software, and electronic mail.

     

    Skill in reading and interpreting construction plans.

     

    Skill in the use of hand tools such as shovel, pick, hammer, and chisel.

     

    Ability to understand and apply principles noted in the Manual of Instructions for the Survey.

     

    Ability to maintain keyboard skills necessary for successful job performance.

     

    Ability to effectively lead, direct, and review the work of assigned crewmembers.

     

    Ability to respond with tact, composure, and courtesy in difficult circumstances.

     

    Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.

     

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, contractors, consultants and the general public.

    Physical and Mental Requirements:

    While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, pull, lift, finger, talk, hear and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have close visual acuity. The employee is subject to both inside and outside conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin.

    Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
