Job Description Summary:
*This is a part-time (24 hours/week), day shift position at the Bing Cancer Center. This position is eligible for full benefits.*
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in life sciences, or a high school diploma (of the
equivalent) with at least 2 years of experience in a health or science-related
field. (Required)
- Background in health or life sciences with a focus on genetics or molecular
biology.
- Basic understanding of genetic information such as chromosomes, genes,
genetic variants, and patterns of inheritance is preferred.
- Detail-oriented, team player with good interpersonal skills and organizational
skills.
- Ability to work with all levels/specialties of the healthcare team.
- Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office as required by the
department.
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for supporting the activities and projects of the department. Assist Genetic Counselors with a variety of designated administrative tasks including but not limited to collection and processing of patient medical and family history information and providing assistance to patients, families, and other staff personnel. Individual will be expected to review medical charts and summarize pertinent information, perform cost estimates and insurance pre-authorizations, coordinate and track specialized lab tests with reference laboratories, as well as maintain genetic testing supply/kit inventory. The Genetic Counseling Coordinator may interact with patients regarding scheduling, billing updates, genetic testing status and may provide normal results to patients as directed by Genetic Counselor.
Responsibilities And Duties:
60% Clinical Responsibilities: Performs various patient related duties in support of the Genetic Counselor. Collects and processes pre-appointment medical and family history data from patients. Works with patients and providers to obtain pertinent records from outside sources. Responsible for compiling data collected for use by Genetic Counselors during patient sessions. May provide normal results to patients as directed by Genetic Counselor.
30% Communication: Handles routine correspondence such as post appointment mailings, schedules appointments, and acts as a liaison and resource person for patients and outside reference laboratories; responds to information requests.
10% Project work: assists with the gathering of information and supports Genetic Counselors in responding to requests related to department projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree: Life Sciences, High School or GED (Required)
